Wow, took me an hour and a half to do chores this morning
it never takes me that long.
But... everything was frozen, except the donkey water. The bulb burned out in the layer cell, not that it would have helped much with the waterer, cause all of the others were frozen too. I ended up gathering up some of those rubber feeders and filling them with water from the house (used the dog's pail to carry it,
the dog was whining for her pail the whole time, following me around, she is so possessive!!).
The donkeys weren't a bother to do, the chickens were another story, aside form the waterers, the layers all wanted out, and I wanted them to stay inside. So every time I went in or out I had to toe them back away from the door. The two remaining goonies kept following me around making as much noise as possible. I would have put them in the coop for extra warmth, but they wouldn't go. I think they just wanted the layers to come out and share their misery.
I got them all fed, gave them extra treats this morning, some corn and some bread, to make up for being stuck inside. Then I had to take Miss Piggy off her nest and sort those eggs, and make her go to the water (she drank forever, I don't think she's been off the nest much at all) then I put her back in the nest (after taking half the eggs, she had way too many, some of them got cold.) and gave her some food in the nest.
Now, all of that wouldn't have taken so long, but I still have a bum hand and wrist, so I was doing all this basically one handed
- it took some juggling. I could use the hand to hold stuff that wasn't too heavy, but to open pins to get the doors or gates open, or to do anything that took twisting my wrist, I had to do it left handed. My wrist/hand is better this morning, but not up to par yet, and I'm afraid to twist it much cause it hurts when I do and I don't want it to be like it was last night. Most of the pain this morning is in the wrist, so I know I must have pinched something in there - no idea how, but I did.
Neighbor had called this morning at about 7:30 - his pipes froze up and he was calling to borrow some water (
borrow?). By the time I called him back, though, he had his pipes nearly unfroze, so he said he'd be over later to get those eggs. He's the one who told me last night to be sure to leave the water turned on to drip so the pipes wouldn't freeze - unfortunately, his house is way older than mine (and not nearly as air tight), and I had no trouble (without turning on faucets) and his froze up badly.
So, everyone is fed, watered and safely tucked in the coops - I moved the lamps over the top of the waterers, hoping to thaw them that way. I'll check later, I may have to just bring them inside, cause it isn't supposed to warm up much today. Then again, I may just keep using the rubber feeders - they are easier to get the ice out of. That is, as long as they don't tip them over and make a mess with them.
Well, gonna cruise BYC for a bit. Any typos I missed, just read past them
