Awe the poor baby

Just wasn't meant to be I guess...
Well I'm thinking the one I thought was an Australorp may be something else it looks like it is drying blue so it may be one of the BLRW/BCMs...I'll have to check the shell it came out of later if the little bantam chick that just hatched doesn't mix them up too much that one is a little wild child, it's everywhere. That one came into the world with the goal of waking the rest of the chicks up rolling them all over.

Found another pip as well so puts my hopeful hatching count to 7 total. With 3 of them already out.

Well, I hope I have some living babies out of this. If I have horrid luck with this batch, I'll just know not to let them go broody in the cold weather. I had my doubts, anyway, but I figured if I had a broody hen, why fight it

I'm still learning on a lot of this.

I still have the option of taking the eggs away from her, too, and putting them into the incubator, but so close to hatch I'm not sure what that would do - so I'm leaving them there, unless things go horribly wrong.

I definately have to have hubby build me one of those Broody Pens like Fr. Chuck showed us. That would have been much better. I could have put her inside the barn, out of the way of all the other hens. If they were still in the main coop, I would have moved her into the brooder cage, but they aren't in that coop anymore.

It probably wasn't so much the cold but that the other hen was laying in her nest therefore having too many eggs. Belle incubated and hatched her chicks in the low 30s. The only problem I had was her chicks tangling in her feathers.

Yeah, first order of business come spring is a broody pen. It is easy to make (might have one this winter, if we can't work on other stuff cause of mud) and would only take an afternoon to do it. Shoot, I have most of the materials, even. All I'd need is some more 1/4 hardware cloth for the bottom of it (with chicks, I would want the tighter weave.) I have 1/2" hardware cloth for the front caging.

If I have enough metal, I may just make a double one - two broody cages side by side. Ya never know when I may need two of them at once

Hey ladrifter, looks like my mini rex doe is going to have to be put down. I am pretty sure she broke her back. I still have the buck, if your grandson would want him. Or I have 3 other does that I will breed this spring. They aren't mini's, but they aren't much bigger. How are the cochin babies doing?

NEW UPDATE 2 EEs, 1 BA?, and one of the bantams are out and about...Still have 2 pippers and 2 zippers working on getting out. Brings my total to 8 if they make it through all the tumbling the others are putting them through.

ETA: Can you tell how happy I am to be on my last batch? And to top it off it's my best hatch yet...

Aw Shelley I'm sorry about your bunny...

At least she won't suffer any longer. Need a crippled Lionhead? One of my BFFs kids crippled her when she was young. She still gets around good though. I let her out in the back porch on nice days. She's a sweety.

No thanks, I'm thinking I might just get rid of all of the rabbits I have. It was supposed to be one as a pet, and that turned into a friend giving us one more (which ended up being 2), then we got one at a sale cause she was only $1, and the mini rexes. I wish this doe hadn't hurt herself. I think I would like to have just those. They are so sweet and soft! Maybe they'll have them at that sale in Liberty again, and I can get me another doe. But I think we might just go back to one.

Congrats on the babies Cindy!! That is neat!

Sorry about your baby Meri, you just don't have good luck with eggs hatching at your place do you? I would think the problem was the other hens laying in the nest with her as well. Gertie hatched 8 of 8 the 3rd of December, and it wasn't much warmer then. But there was no one sharing the nest with her.

Oh, Cindy, how's Duchess doing? I hope she likes it there! At least she is not outnumbered almost 2:1 on roos!

Oh last thing, I think, we have 6 new additions to our 'family'. Dad's beagle had her pups last night, 4 girls and 2 boys. They are so cute! I'm sure they will be spoiled rotten by Cristian! So we will probably have beagle pups in a few months that need new homes!

ladrifter Wow! did you ever come to the right place. We are all a little strange around here. I think that is why we get along so well.
