Mojo Chick'n :

I'm awake... I think....

I walked outside this morning and it is "snowing" sort of, little light misty type of flakes - Lily loves winter, so she is excited,

. The poor dog misses deep snow, she used to plow through it face first and roll around in the stuff. Toby, on the other hand, walked out and looked at it snowing, then climbed into a chair on the porch to wait for me to get done with chores so he could go back into the nice warm house

.

At least the wind isn't blowing 20 mph today

Dogs are silly! Probably because Lily is a water dog. But Toby is part beagle, and when they hunt it's always in the winter? What a baby!! Now my dog Baby would probably love it if it would snow. She is usually laying in the dirt when it's raining!! I think she needs a bigger house. She has to stoop to get into the one she has now, and she's only 9 months old! I think I'll make her one later on, cheaper than buying them!! Then I could use her house for my ducks or something, cause it is too big for Midget!

so hubby says to me last night....

"I'm gonna build you another 8x8 coop for your extra chickens that ya hatch, and plan to sell, so ya don't have to mix them with the other chickens, ok?"

ummm.. sure, ok, I guess I could force myself to be happy with yet another coop

yeah, I was thinking of a dog house style thingy for the ducks and geese. or maybe, since they like to be outside, just a three sided lean-to that blocks the major wind directions. Put in some nest boxes towards the back of it, in case they want to use them.

I may just be slowly taking over the entire lower back pasture area where they new coop is. If he builds me another coop, it'll go there, and I was thinking of putting the duck/goose lean to down there, (until I have a pond).

i have a question about that egg swap thing on here my silkies have really fluffy butts
gig.gif
and decreases fertility i have had chicks form but what happens if the eggs i send are not fertile ps i am including any sultan eggs i get to SHHHHH! Dont tell i told you shelly
lau.gif

i am going to klip away all there feathers around there vent today for better fertility!
i am including a note anyway

A lean-to would be fine for ducks and geese, they probably wouldn't even use it. You can train them to go in at night, since that's when they get caught the easiest. As for a nest box, you'd have to make sure it is more or less on the ground. If you would keep them locked up during laying season till about 10 or so, they should lay in the building. It's my understanding that they usually lay in the morning.

I have only 3 baby ducks so far. They woke me up last night crying

There are only 2 more that are pipped, but I'm not sure about the other ones. Hope I get more than 5 babies from 13 eggs!!

I was wondering if the silkies needed to be trimmed. It would be hard to tell if the eggs you send were not fertile or just didn't develop. It's almost impossible to crack the egg open without destroying the yolk after it has been incubated. So the person that got the eggs would probably just think that the P.O. destroyed them. But no one signs up for any specific breed, so I'm sure they would be happy with anything as long as it was a baby!!

Breeding season is mostly year round, but if they are not laying now they should start back up in February or March.

I am wondering if I did put out a little wading pool, if I put it on top of gravel if that would cut down on some of the dirty muddy water - of course, they would probably still poop in it

but it might help - what do you all think?
