Well, it is already a depression area, and we'll probably try doing it by hand - it won't be a very big pond, but yeah, ask him how much, and I'll pass it on to Bruce. We may regret wanting to do it by hand, we're tryign to get out of it cheap. It'll be a small pond, probably 15 ft. across one way, and 20 ft. across the other way.

Most of it is actually already dug, it is about 6 foot deep, and the size I mentioned around. It is a ditch over to the right of our house (other side - not towards the coops, towards the other hayfield).

There's a lot of seedling trees and briars and weeds in there, we'd have to clear those out, smooth it out a bit, and lay a liner. Then just fill it up, and being a ditch to begin with, a lot of the rains would help keep it filled, too.

we'd also have to bank one side of it, but the stuff we clear out can be part of our fill on there, then just haul in some dirt to make it solid.

eta - I'll take some pics so it is easier to envision after this nastiness stops and I can get out there.

This guy did a really good job. The place where dad's is was all downhill, and the guy filled it in around the sides so it would stay where he put it! I'll ask him the guys name when he wakes up. Both him and Cris are asleep on the couch, hopefully no one wets the bed! Dad will probably turn over and knock Cris off, then yell at him for spilling his ashtray or something. I'll have to go get Cris before long and put his pull-up on, or there will be a mess, and I don't want to hear the griping!

You could just tell your dad it must have been HIM who wet the couch

that would go over well

Did your dad have to fill his at all? or did it just naturally fill, and if so, how long did it take to fill? I was planning to start it out with the hose - but it is like 20,000 gallons of water!!!
I told Sammy I have an old 5 gallon bucket without a handle, he could carry the water for it out there for me

btw - the spring, naturally, is at the other side of the property

No his filled on its own. He put it right next to where an underground spring runs out, so it always has a fresh supply of water. Unless it gets really dry like last summer. That pond was at least 4 feet lower than it normally is!

well, ours is a drainage ditch, no spring near it, unfortunately. But it is at the bottom of two pretty good sized hills, and all the rain goes down in there (I can grow a BIG crop of briars and weeds in it every summer

)

I'll just have to take pics, and show ya how the land lays.

All right. The only problem that I could see with it is that a lot of people that have ponds dug around here seem to do it in a spot that has very good drainage, so the ponds never have any water in them, unless it rains a lot. But if you are going to put a liner in it, then it probably won't matter much. Though, if you plan to put your ducks and geese on it, they would probably tear the liner.

It was pouring so loudly earlier, it practically drowned out the TV.

Hubby and I watched The Wild (cartoon movie) it is so cute!! I love Eddy Izzard, anyway - he's a hoot.

I've never seen it before, but there is NOTHING else on (or wasn't, anyway) so we watched that.

The yard is flooded all the way in front of the main coop now - the ducks will be in heaven tomorrow.

Did I tell ya about that silly Bossy earlier (I probably did....) that puddle was huge looking to her, so she kept swimming to the center, thinking I couldn't catch her there, and every time I walked out to the middle, she swam as fast as she could to the edge to run

I laughed my butt off at her.

It was only about 8 inches deep then, I stepped into it tonight when I went to turn off lights and it went over my boot top

so it is a bit deeper than that, now.

I'll get pics of them playing in it tomorrow.

Yeah, we (me and Cris) watched that movie too. Yes, Cris is still awake. Little booger, I'm about ready to bop him in the head with something and knock him out!
