Kentucky people

actually there is one in KY - they have a few chickens, mostly it is game birds (quail and the like) Look up Lake Cumberland Gamebird Farm and Hatchery. It is over by Monticello. (close to me, shelley and cindy) I haven't ever bought form them, or spoken with them, but they have pics of their farm up on the site - looks like a nice place.

They're also working on a store so people can pick up stuff rather than have it shipped.

yeah, I didn't know for sure what all they had. I hadn't planned on ordering from them, anyway. I did order some chicks from Cackle, though - they aren't too far, just over in central Missouri.

What kills me is that if the bigger hatcheries have problems shipping, then the smaller hatcheries will start to charge more (the bigger ones already are charging more).

Now, I understand that the smaller hatcheries probably have better quality birds, but not everyone is in it to show them - I don't do shows, personally. I like decent quality birds, but don't need show quality, ya know what I mean?

There'll always be a market for show quality birds for those who want to breed to perfection or do show. It's the backyard folks and small farm folks who want a few eggs and some meat from the birds who will be harmed if they stop shipping.

This is one reason I resist all the posts telling me (and everyone else) to "just buy cornish cross" what happens when/if you can't GET cornish cross shipped to you? What happens if no one bothers to develop the dual purpose breeds that can be hatched out at someone's house (rather than in some huge hatchery or lab) and all we are left with are cute fluffy chickens that aren't much good for meat?

I'm not a doomsday crier - I don't believe that it'll come to that, but it could (nothing is impossible), and I've been wrong before. I would just rather be able to rely on ME than to rely on the Govt. or a Hatchery being able to stay in business.

The storm has hit this part of the state bad..Several thousand in my county without power and out neighboring county has been declared a state of emergency..Today 3/4 of its roads were closed due to down trees..they have about 8K people without power and its a small county..I was fortunate..We only lost power for about an hour..I have BCM eggs in the bator

I think 5 of 7 are developing..hard to tell with so dark an egg..

Wow, hope your eggies are okay! And you too of course! We didn't get much bad weather here. There was a thin layer of ice yesterday morning, it rained all night last night, and it was snowing this morning when we woke up. We haven't lost power at all (knock on wood).

My 4 y/o decided to plop down in the snow and make a snow-angel as soon as he went outside!

Too bad he doesn't have any snow pants!

I can't find boys' snow pants around here anywhere!

Well, I'm happy I called Ideal this morning - apparently my order didn't go through over internet (I figured as much, since I hadn't had a confirmation email or anything) so I ordered over the phone. They ship out Feb 4th

So... I guess I'd better get that brooder bin ready (or maybe 2 brooder bins

Anyone want to buy some extra Blue Swedish Ducks? They are straight run. I don't need 20 of them

(I may WANT all 20 of them, but hubby would have a frowny face if I kept them all

I'll probably take the extras to Sano. But not until it warms up a bit, sheesh it is chilly out there this morning.

Hi everybody!, I'm still here in frozen Louisville. Lots of wires down around the city, and they are expecting more to come down as the weather changes. The big maple in my backyard got damaged again, only more limbs down all over the backyard, my cover over the pigeon cages was destroyed, limbs came down all over, some landed on the new pen/run for my OEGB trio but no damage to it.

My neighbors had the maple in the front yard split and took down the lines to their house, causing the police to use the caution tape and tie it to my car to keep people from driving down the street, which of course some idiot ran through and broke down. My other neighbors have had trees come down on their houses, and cars.

At least I still have electricity and water, for the moment. Sitting here with a space heater blasting away at me while I type. he furkids are all buried under the blankets and afghans on the bed.

From the news reports there are more people without power and water across the state than when Ike came through. One whole county has no power or water. I just wish I could use my fireplaces.

Be careful when traveling on secondary roads, as only the primary roads are being cleared and maintained it seems.

Hey FrChuck

Just came off dispatch for all those power problems. LGE is getting a lot fixed and KU is getting more problems. I havent had power since Tuesday afternoon and not sure when it will come back.

Glad your birds are ok!

I'm still here. Ice all over but I still have electric, and my birds are doing well. About two weeks ago my neighbors told me one of my roosters was out and I had to run him down, and I was missing my Dark Brahma Bantam roo. This was unusual, so I think a hawk must have gotten the Brahma and scared the other roo into running. He was two years old.

There is a hatchery just east of Winchester. But they tend to sell only to hatcheries. They trap nest their birds and keep extensive records on them. Expensive birds but real good quality.

One day I'd like to go visit them.

I'm starting to get cabin fever. Got to get out. Hope you all are doing well. Cindy as well.
