Kentucky people

Hey there! the rest of the western Kentuckians are either still w/o power, digging out from under the branches, or sliding around on the remaining ice.

Today was the first day since Mon. evening my chickens have been outside. When I opened their door, the big RIR roo made that long drawn out sound that Writer of Words so eloquently described as sounding like a velociraptor, and sounded for all the world like he was saying, "WHAAAAAAAAAAT !!!!!" They were afraid to walk on the solid ice, but the guineas started in on the part that was melting (melting off the netting that once covered the big run but which is now entirely on the ground in a solid sheet of ice...

). That part was like pellets, and the guineas were gobbling it up like it was popcorn. They had water in the house, but I guess they're like their momma -- ice eaters!

Gee, it's good to be able to see what's going on in the rest of the world again!

Briarpatch, Somewhere I read that you can have up to 25 quail (Bobwhites) without a permit. I'll try to look that up.

mahen, I grew up in Poplar Bluff, MO and go through Mounds on my way home. ie. I know where Fulton is. Hope you get electric soon.

just got 2 kerosene heaters and a generator yesterday so we are doing ALOT better now! But will be soooo glad when we get our power turned back on!

Please be careful with the heaters and generators, here in Louisville we have had 5 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning due to heaters and generators. Plus we have had a few fires that were started by people trying to use their chimneys, and barbecue grills to heat their homes.

I tihnk the reason we DIDN'T lose power was because we were prepared for it.

I think the Universe has a sick sense of humor sometimes. A few of our friends lost power around us, but we never even flickered.

I believe that this is because we have two generators hard-wired into the breaker box - all we have to do is go out and start them and flip a few breakers, and we've got power. We also hooked up a woodstove for heat.

Last winter during the tornados we lost power - everything in our place is electric, which meant no heat, nothing. The power came back on in about 24 hours, thankfully, but it was COLD!!!

I can do without lights, computer and TV and the like, but when it is 15 degrees outside I like to have heat - I'm just silly that way.

I'm glad everyone is getting their power back. Hope your houses and coops came through the ice ok, too.

Ok, morning tally on the hatching.... Two chicks in the brooder bin, one is still in the bator, cause he is acting sort of weak - took him a long time to hatch and his butt got stuck to the shell. We'll see if he makes it or not....

Got two pips this morning, one in each bator. Hopefully will have more action later today.

So far the three that have hatched were from Mr. Speckle's coop, which sort of confirms my suspicions that while George is the best rooster ever born, he has trouble hitting the mark with his ladies, sometimes. I hope to get some of his babies - the only one I have is Jr. and she is such a weirdo. I do have one of her eggs in the bator, though, just to see what freak of nature might pop out of it. Jr. is a pretty girl, but she is just "not right in the head" if ya know what I mean

Hubby wants me to get more laying hens

The girls have cut way back on laying with the cold snap, so I am only getting about 5 eggs a day out of 20 or so hens. I told him it will be picking up soon - it is looking more like spring out there. (or is it that my rose colored glasses have fallen off my head and down in front of my eyes again ? )

Oh, what the heck, Happy February First - I'm officially declaring it to be SPRING!!! I refuse to believe that it is still winter, or that we will get any more really super cold weather, and it is only going to get nicer and nicer as the week goes on. By mid month you can pack away your coats and haul out that bikini - run wild, boys and girls. You'll be nice and suntanned by March First !!

Really..... Pinky Swear......
