Kentucky people

My poor bantam EE hen, Emma, is gone. Poor Cristian is so sad. That was probably his favorite chicken. I do think that she starved to death. I put her in a cage with another injured chicken the other day, with lots of food, and vitamin/electrolyte water. I'm thinking maybe I should have taken it slow. It's probably for the best though, she had no fight left in her. She was so scared of all the other chickens that she would walk away from the food when another hen would come around. Those stupid roos....I wish I would have gotten rid of them sooner.

I also think she had sour crop. About the only thing she would eat was corn or grains, and she stayed in the building all the time, so about the only 'grit' she got was dirt. I didn't notice the 'smell' that she had when I was carrying her to her grave.

So let this be a lesson, get rid of your extra roos!! I know I will with mine, even if I have to make one big pen for all the hens, to keep them safe. I wish I still did have those red pyles, I would just love to ring their necks right now!!

Question of the day for my fellow hillbillies. What breed or types of chickens are NOT popular/sellable in Kentucky. Now I am not into chickens for selling, but when I end up with spare chicks I want to have something that I can unload without problems. Would I be correct to think that the dual purpose are the most popular as a whole? I have always loved the white egglayers (leghorns, buttercups, hamburgs etc.) but I never see any as I driving scouting chicken flocks during the day.

I would say that dual purpose breeds are probably the most popular. Or bantam purebreds. In this area, OEGB are very popular. I would say just about any large breed, egg layer or meat type, would be a good sell, but the people probably won't pay what you want for them, so just be prepared for that.
I don't really think there is any that are totally unpopular, except mixed breed bantams, I can't give those away! Well, I could give them away, but I'm not going to!!

ETA: When do you guys go to get your little girl? I hope you post pics of her when you do!

Ok, I'm usually home, unless, like today I've spent the entire day travelling to get stuff, and then cleaning said stuff outside cause it's nice out

The ducks were kept amused, though, every time Hubby used the hose, they came running. They have two places to swim in - but they wanted MUD

But mud is so much more fun!!

My ducks are loving the mud we have! They are constantly wandering around the yard digging! I doubt they are finding much, unless worms and stuff hibernate. I imagine they would, so the ducks like the soft dirt cause it's easier to dig the goodies out of.

I've seen some bugs flying around here. I can even hear the tree frogs over at the swamp if I go outside - that's always a good sign of spring being near. I did see a worm earlier, but the chickens didn't see it

so it got away.

Lucky worm! A worm wouldn't last 2 seconds here!! I only had one chicken that wouldn't eat them. Cris would pick them up and feed them to the chickens once he learned how much they liked them! He gave some to Emma and her chicks this past fall, and she didn't even look at them! So he picked them up and took them to Sissy and her babies. He didn't even have to put them down, Sissy just came and snatched them out of his hand!

Oh, I almost forgot to share this one....

I'm coming home from Cindy's and we stop to talk to the neighbor, since he is just pulling up to his driveway - turns out he just got back from taking his dog to the vet. Our other neighbors dogs (the ones that chase the cars every time you drive by) ripped his dog's tail off!!! They ganged up on her and tore her tail clean off and tore a muscle on her back leg.

Needless to say, he is going hunting the next time those dogs are in his yard.

I'm glad they don't come all the way over to my house - I'd have to get violent if I even saw them contemplating coming on my property.

These two dogs have been a nuisance for a long time, and the owners won't do anything about it. Jamie tried to be nice and talk to the guy, and got told where to get off, and then this happened - so now he isn't talking anymore. I don't blame him a bit, he can't afford that type of vet bill, and his dog might be crippled, now, poor thing. Luckily the local constable vouched for him so they're gonna let him make payments on the vet bill.

All his dog did was follow his kid to the bus stop this morning, and it never made it back to his house without being attacked. (the bus stop is at the end of his driveway, but that is on the edge of the other dog's yard.)
