Kentucky people

Well, Toby and Lily, my brave critter hunters - tangled with a skunk last night.

I was wondering when this would happen, and I'm surprized it's taken them two years to find one.

Now, Lily has gotten face to butt with a skunk once before, so she was smart enough to stand back a little once she discovered it was one of those "bad kitties". Toby, being a newb and all, didn't have that experience to go on.

Needless to say they both slept outside last night. It had to happen after I had gone to bed (just) and hubby opens the door to the bedroom and says "ya smell that?"

So, I got up and checked the poultry - everyone was fine, although I did have this little owl on the new run top looking at the ducks - which were like 5 times the size of that owl. The same owl was here last summer, too - he is about the size of a softball - just a little thing, not sure how much damage he could do.

But no skunk over there.

One of my meaties dropped dead of heart attack yesterday (at 6 weeks) so I had tossed it into the burn barrel (didn't burn yet) so maybe that is what attracted the skunk, he was out back somewhere.

So, my fun thing to do today is give skunk baths. In the pouring rain. With people coming over to buy birds later.

Hmm... I wonder how much the rain will take the stink off of them before I have to tackle that job.

I can tell Toby got hit right in his face, too - he was rubbing his whole head all over the ground last night when he came running back, all proud that he had scared off the "bad kitty".

Poor puppy.

Actually the best recipe I've found is peroxide, baking soda and a little dish soap mixed and used as a detergent to scrub it off them. The peroxide disolves the oils (the skunk spray is an oil) and the baking soda supposedly deodorizes, although I think perhaps a week at a French Perfumery couldn't do much for them, and the soap is to make the oil disolve, also, so it dissipates into the water.

Toby, I believe, knows what is coming and is hiding under the boy's trailer to postpone his bath (he hates baths).

pop57,

I love my new babies! They are absolutely hilarious. I gave them a piece of grass and they have played tug of war all night! My husband set up the webcam. You can't see them all the time, but you can catch a peek at them here:

(you should be able to hear them if you turn up your volume)

It was nice meeting you! Although next time I'm NOT bringing Jason...I could have brought home all kinds of new babies if he hadn't been there! lol

I know that you all are probably already up to your ears in chicks and chickens as you have much more experience and I hope that I am not being rude (especially as a newbie on the site and this thread) but I was wondering if there is anyone (or two) people within about an hour of Louisville that would be interested in splitting a batch of chicks with me. I really want to get 3 more chicks this year and my husband will not let me pay the $35 shipping charges that mypetchicken charges for small orders. The hatchery where I got my original chicks from is called healthy chicks and more and they allow you to get an order of 10 chicks. You can get any of the breeds they offer. I am planning on getting a SLW, a GLW, and an EE (I have given up on the Blue Orpingtons for now until I can have a bigger flock and maybe breed them myself). Anyway, I thought I'd make one last attempt at getting these chicks before my husband changes his mind. Let me know if you'd be interested in getting 7 chicks. Thanks and sorry if this is annoying to those of you who have LOTS of chicks already.

I have 7 silver laced wyandotte's I would sell that are 5 week's old if you or anyone is interested. 4.00 each,,,I also have a Lil Giant incubator with automatic turner if anyone is looking for one...65.00

Thanks...

The faith Community, called Communality, that my wife and I are a part of has 4 families that all have birds. Its a constant topic of conversation. Raising birds with other people is way better than going it alone. But better to raise than not at all!

I agree, it is always better to 'talk chicken' with someone that actually likes them! My dad drives me nuts, he is the type that says "it's just a bird"

So his birds have barebacks from the roos and the mites, and he thinks it's normal
