Well, Toby and Lily, my brave critter hunters - tangled with a skunk last night.
I was wondering when this would happen, and I'm surprized it's taken them two years to find one.
Now, Lily has gotten face to butt with a skunk once before, so she was smart enough to stand back a little once she discovered it was one of those "bad kitties". Toby, being a newb and all, didn't have that experience to go on.
Needless to say they both slept outside last night. It had to happen after I had gone to bed (just) and hubby opens the door to the bedroom and says "ya smell that?"
So, I got up and checked the poultry - everyone was fine, although I did have this little owl on the new run top looking at the ducks - which were like 5 times the size of that owl. The same owl was here last summer, too - he is about the size of a softball - just a little thing, not sure how much damage he could do.
But no skunk over there.
One of my meaties dropped dead of heart attack yesterday (at 6 weeks) so I had tossed it into the burn barrel (didn't burn yet) so maybe that is what attracted the skunk, he was out back somewhere.
So, my fun thing to do today is give skunk baths. In the pouring rain. With people coming over to buy birds later.
Hmm... I wonder how much the rain will take the stink off of them before I have to tackle that job.
I can tell Toby got hit right in his face, too - he was rubbing his whole head all over the ground last night when he came running back, all proud that he had scared off the "bad kitty".
Poor puppy.
