Nope no silkies, was sort of disapointed, actually

not that I want them, but they make good trading birds

Turns out I have 5 mille fleurs (miscounted) and the two EE look to be roos - one has wry tail. I think he simply unloaded those roos on Debbie
lau.gif
but I'm not complaining about free chickens, I can sell them at Sano at least.

So, I will probably keep the mille fleurs for awhile (until I see if they have nice patterning - they just look awkward right now) and the Bantam Cochins, well, we'll see. I love the blues (want some LF Blues next spring) but I didn't really want bantams. I need to think on that one, I guess. Hubby likes the milles though, so maybe I'll keep those for him - if not, they'll sell better when they don't look so gawky anyway.

Congrats on being called back to work

My calf I got yesterday morning I named Curly
lau.gif
I'll get some pics later to show ya why - his hair is curly all over
gig.gif
he is adorable. Tony said they are (at least some of them) mixed with Simental bulls, so that is probably why they are so big when we get them.

I am finally getting more pullets laying eggs, so I think I have hubby convinced to let me sell out the bottom cell of the lower coop. (the ones he keeps changing his mind about.) Some of the pullets down there are laying, also, now, but even so, out of 20 hens in that coop I get 4 eggs a day.
roll.png
feeding them for nothing, IMO

I've been trying to figure out how to work the coops. I love to see them all free ranging, and they are healthier doing that, so I'm thinking I need to only lock them up in winter, maybe, to get eggs for breeding, and summers they can run free all they want. If they would stick to their own kind it would be easy
lau.gif
but all the girls like Mr. Feathers, and the pair I got from Shelley stick together, and Nana-too goes off by herself. Then the other cockerels hang out together. Although, some of the girls do follow Bubba around (he is one pretty cockerel).

I moved the biggest quail babies out to the coop today. I have them in a huge cage in George's cell. Actually, I further separated them and put some of the smaller ones into a smaller cage next to it. I still have some inside - have to fix up a cage out there for them, too.

But, no rest for the weary - I have 130 more quail eggs that are due to hatch soon. Then I think I'll have enough quail for awhile. I'm gonna try to turn off the bators and see if hubby notices
wink.png

If he does notice I'll just tell him I am too busy with cows to do chicks anymore this year. I already have over 100 chicks to raise up to sell, I think that's enough. Chicken selling seems to be slowing down around here, somewhat.

Besides, I want to get my breeders separated so I can maybe hatch some pures before winter sets in too badly. I want to add some more Buff Orps to my own flocks, so I'd like to get a start on those this fall, and maybe they'll be laying by spring. Before I do that, though, I want to strip the hatchery room and clean it from top to bottom before putting it all back together again.

Oh, and I had the most wonderful cold green bean salad yesterday at the Family Reunion. I'll have to share the recipe with ya all if you're interested. They were sesame seed dressing over cooled streamed green beans.... they were delish, I wasn't the only one who tracked down the lady who made them, to get the recipe
wink.png

I guess everyone's green beans were in this week, because there were about 5 green bean dishes there
lau.gif
- I love green beans, but other than Jon, who moved, no one else in the house will eat them besides me. I have green beans on the vine (the one that survived the chickens) that I've been eating raw and sharing with the geese (to distract them from eating my shirt). Oh, and someone made a green bean casserole (you know the one) but instead of fried onions on top, they did crushed crackers - you know the round buttery ones (can't think of their name right now). I liked how that made it different, too.

The best desert, though, was that someone had made blackberry cobbler mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

meri

Meri, I believe the cracker you are thinking of is called Ritz, they also make the Flips, Pretzel on one side, cracker on the other. Crushed they make an interesting change for the breading/flour mix for fried chicken.

Thanks for the congrats also. It was a fun day at work. Sunday was not a good day, I was on my way to put together a shed for a friend in Simpsonville and the van died on me. Turns out the belt came off the alternator and the alternator itself had come loose. So I had to be towed home from Simpsonville because the place I bought it from was closed. So Monday I will have to see about getting it towed to either the dealer or my mechanic to get it fixed.
A simple fix, but beyond my capabilities at the present.

Someone got into my big coop the other day and stole some eggs that I missed collecting on Friday. The only way I know is one of my banty hens was outside and the dogs almost got her. I was finally able to catch her and get her back inside the coop. Guess I'll have to install a lock on both runs now. At least they didn't grab one of the hens to eat! I am so tired of living in the city!

Still waiting to hear about my disability, if it gets approved, they will have to back pay me from last November. Definite move money!

My blue splash silkie is still sitting on eggs with no chicks hatching yet, haven't had a chance to candle them to see what is going on with them. She has been sitting on them for a long time, maybe in the next day or two they will hatch, as the older chicks are now between 3-4 weeks old.

Why do people do that?? It's not like you don't give them away anyway. All they would have had to do was ask, and you probably would have given them to them. Some people

Sorry to hear about the van, hope you get things all straightened out. Glad you had fun at work (is that even possible?
big_smile.png
Seems like a contradiction in terms there)

Well, the incredible dead mouse stink is gone from my office this morning (I think). Either hubby found it after I went to bed, or Toby found it and ate it
sickbyc.gif
either way, I am either terribly stuffed up from the air conditioner yesterday, or it is gone.

Hubby has decided that he wants to keep the Mille Fleurs for awhile - to see if they turn out pretty (they're really gawky looking right now.) I know he likes those, so he'll probably keep them

I only have ONE incubator turned on right now

oh for gosh sakes, just noticed I put my shirt on backwards this morning!! Oh well, I aint going out in public yet.

I need to go and clairfy my post on the chickenswap thread (my wants) I had pullets on there, I'd take hatching eggs, too

I wish I could turn mine off!! I need to hatch some more quail, if I can afford to not sell them for a few days. But just when I thought I might be able to turn it off, the cochins started laying again. I can't just eat their eggs, so into the bator they went!!
big_smile.png
Oh, and we also found some guinea eggs, so had to set those too

Well, Mr. Snake came back - I think it's the same one (same calm manner and same size). It was over by the brooder coop tonight when I was putting chicks to bed.

He is such a nice snake, I really do not want to kill this guy.

We painted the tip of his tail Ford Tractor Blue - so I know next time if it's the same snake. Took him back over to other side of property.

If he comes back again - anyone want a very sweet tempered, very pretty Rat Snake to come eat your mice?

lau.gif

meri

Nothing eats the mice around here!! They are crawling all over the place in the building! My goose almost stepped on one tonight, just about scared the poor thing (the goose) to death!

I posted this on the chickenstock thread, but we are in the planning stages for the 'Kentucky Chickenstock 2009' t-shirts! Ronnie is going to draw something up, and send it to me for 'approval' (I feel so special
big_smile.png
). So how many of us is getting one? I forgot to ask about kid sizes, I'd get one for Cris too. He said he'd shoot for the $10 price-range.

I was also thinking of a shirt I'd like designed. You know how BYC has 'my pet makes me breakfast' shirts? I was thinking of a shirt that has a picture of a coturnix on it that says 'my pets pay my feed bill'

Hey Duke, I was sleeping in VERRRRRRRRRRRY late today. I was up way too late last night trying to get my school work done, then my kid woke up too. So he even slept till noon today!
gig.gif
That doesn't happen often. We probably would have both still been sleeping if CedarRidgeChicks hadn't stopped by to get her quail eggs!
