yeah, up in Michigan I had a city lot (less than an acre, easily) and I paid about 1000 per year in taxes on it.
it pretty much is all clay - but there are tons of gardens down here, so a trip to the extension office (or a chat with the old timers - who, btw will talk your ear off, even if you are a total stranger
) will let you know how they prepare the soil. I am amazed at my neighbor's gardens - they are huge and bountiful. Me, I'm not such a green thumb, so I am gonna have a lot of containers this next spring
(My beans did really well, my cukes, too - the tomatoes did fantastic, til I got blossom end rot
)
crime around here isn't that bad - mostly it is folks getting nailed for drugs or bootlegging, not violent crimes. If a violent crime does happen around here, it's usually between people who've had longstanding hatred going on.
Louisville, I hear, is worse (most big cities are). Down by us, though, they don't get much.

this is our local online magazine for Columbia - it'll give you a feel for the area. They also do the Court reports to get an idea of crime activity (once a month, was in recently at the end of the month, so an archive search will bring it up pretty fast).
oh, and about that Talking Your Ear Off thing... seriously - you do not just "drop by for a second to say hi" down here
I stopped over at the neighbors Saturday to pick something up...... 45 minutes later.....
Oh, I found a link right on the front page to the police reports
(can't do much here that someone else doesn't know about
)
