I cut a deal with Shelley (to pass on to her dad) that if he can get her to Day & Day feedstore, I'll bring her out here. I need feed anyway.

OMG!!! Maybe I shouldn't let her have them!!!

Obviously there are some issues that need to be worked out here!!

Well, it's all Cindy's fault, actually

last year at this time she came back from the Fair with a slw pullet for me - and tempted me with a bantam cochin pair.
I never wanted cochins - they were too foofy looking. She plopped this little ball of feathers in my hand and said "isn't he cute?"

I loved the bantams, but never (honest to god) had any bantam cochin I've ever owned lay 1 single egg (by the time I was "done" I had a few of them).
I got frustrated and sold them and swore off cochins.

Then I saw your big cochins, and thought "wow!" (so I guess it's your fault, too

)
I had to have the big ones. and I wanted blues because they be purdy chickens.

so that is why I am geeked and I can't wait to get to your house today and get my chickies

Thanks for the city info all (and sorry to keep butting into your conversations

)

I'll definitely check them out and wow - $117 for 25 acres?! Here we pay thousands in property taxes a year and I don't even have an acre!

Is all the soil down there clay/mud? We are big gardeners so being able to grow veggies is important.

Also, are there any areas to avoid? You know - areas with lots of crime, etc? It's really hard to pick a spot blind and know what you're getting into. We're still in the discussing stages now so it'll be a few years yet; want to wait until his elderly parents are gone because there's no one else here to care for them.

yeah, up in Michigan I had a city lot (less than an acre, easily) and I paid about 1000 per year in taxes on it.

it pretty much is all clay - but there are tons of gardens down here, so a trip to the extension office (or a chat with the old timers - who, btw will talk your ear off, even if you are a total stranger
lau.gif
) will let you know how they prepare the soil. I am amazed at my neighbor's gardens - they are huge and bountiful. Me, I'm not such a green thumb, so I am gonna have a lot of containers this next spring
lau.gif
(My beans did really well, my cukes, too - the tomatoes did fantastic, til I got blossom end rot

)

crime around here isn't that bad - mostly it is folks getting nailed for drugs or bootlegging, not violent crimes. If a violent crime does happen around here, it's usually between people who've had longstanding hatred going on.

Louisville, I hear, is worse (most big cities are). Down by us, though, they don't get much.

here - check out this link... http://www.columbiamagazine.com/

this
is our local online magazine for Columbia - it'll give you a feel for the area. They also do the Court reports to get an idea of crime activity (once a month, was in recently at the end of the month, so an archive search will bring it up pretty fast).

oh, and about that Talking Your Ear Off thing... seriously - you do not just "drop by for a second to say hi" down here

I stopped over at the neighbors Saturday to pick something up...... 45 minutes later.....

Oh, I found a link right on the front page to the police reports

Excellent - thanks!!!! Since KY isn't nearly as far as TX (where we were originally planning to go) we might be able to move sooner and then just drive back and forth if needed. We'd both move tomorrow if we could...HATE the winters here and not sure how many more we can honestly handle. Compared to MI weather (which is probably pretty similar to OH) is KY a huge improvement? We don't mind some snow but don't want feet and below 0 temps.
