I do sleep, I was just putting it off last night

I believe I have a chick with a death wish

I hatched a few BR a week or so ago, and there is one chick that keeps getting inside the feeder, then trying to squeeze it's big self out through one of the feeder holes

It had apparently been stuck there for a while this time, as it was peeping, but just kind of laying there. It can get its head and wings out, but its body gets stuck. I'm pretty sure this is the same chick, has done it 3 times now

ETA: Keep in mind that we are on central time here, so it's not quite as late for me

But it was still after 1 when I went to sleep

Just a reminder, at Day & Day's Grand Opening this Saturday, all purina feeds are buy 1 get 1 free. I don't think they have purina dog or cat food, but they have poultry and horse feed from purina.

Anyone going to the Elkton auction this sat? I figure it will be big again after the big sale at Fairview last weekend. People will decide they really don't need all those bargains they bought there. At least I'm hoping so!lol.I'm taking some black cochin chicks, parlor roller pigeons, flying roller pigeons, some easter egg bantams, some golden laced cochins, some booted bantams.I am looking for and want EVERYTHING,at least thats what my wife says!LOl. Hope to see some of you there.

Behuler in Lebanon is a really nice lady. I got some chicks from her and was pleased with them.

Day & Day would be a bit of a drive for ya, it is our local (Columbia) feedstore.

I buy the Day & Day feed mix (their own mix) and use that - my chickens love it (in winter I mix it with some cracked corn).
I think Cindy may have used Southern States feed before, not sure - I never have, personally, so no help there. The Feedstore mix is cheaper than name brand feed, so I use that.

Maybe it's the texture they don't like? I know mine refused to eat pellets (as did Cindy's). I wish I could feed pellets - less waste. Does Southern States put a "dressing" type of thing on theirs? I know mine has a little molasses and it includes brewers grains (maybe I got alcoholic chickens and that's why they like it so much?

no molasses in southern states feed that i can taste. i feed pellets for the less waste factor, but may change. i left a bucket of pellets in the rain the other day and the chickens loved the result. my small flock is just too spoiled i feed them a lot of treats.

Made my girls a really nice treat of several mixed grains from the health food store, they were having a sale. Got about 6 different grains in it... Put a little DE in with it when I got it out there... They love it!

I haven't bought feed from Southern States since I've had chickens again... Been trying to find where it was that had the most grains and the least corn as filler(cause they have plenty of that in their scratch), so I've bought something different every time since I've had these girls. May have been SS forgot to try theirs. Got Burkman Feed this last bag, it's ok but just crumbles, not grain mix or mash looking but the girls eat it.

I've had a couple of gallon sized ziplock bags of pig fat in the freezer since we did that pig this last summer - I'm considering using it for homemade suet blocks for the chickens. I was gonna render it down for soap, but I like the veggie soap I make (the lard soap takes longer and doesn't lather as well).

I also have a bunch of suet cake holders I had gotten last year (and never used) to hang in their runs for entertainment, so I can make small sized "flock blocks" to fit into those and keep em busy this winter. (plus if I hang it it may keep the mice and rats off them).

thigns I'm thinking of adding are - cracked corn, millet, other grains, sunflower seeds (shelled), peanut butter for a little flavor, some raisins...

anything else sound good that you guys would add?

eta - maybe some rolled oats/oatmeal
