I'm done...

While I was out there I was thinking... (my husband is going to kill me) but I would really love another coop

or two! I would love to separate some of the buffs (so I could keep them pure) and then I would like to get some golden comets this spring hummmm... I need to work something out.

I was looking at my Sept. chickies (theres 4 of them) and I think I got to boys and 2 girls, its still had for me to tell.

well, why waste all that fun on just one day? Turn em loose and chase em again.

speaking of which, I've been sitting on facebook and have yet to get my butt out there - I should go now before I realize how much NOT fun this is gonna be.

It was a beautiful day today! Supposed to be the same tomorrow, then the rain comes

Dad and I were making a hutch for my inside quail, so I can quit smelling them all the time. It will be done tomorrow, just have the ends and the top left to put on it, then figure out the specs for the doors. So after tomorrow, I'll only have the button quail, 2 java pullets, and btw jap pullet in the house

Then hatching season will start aaaaalllll over again!

I'm gonna hold off until next month I think, so I don't get stuck keeping a lot of them inside. I'll be hatching mostly quail for Liberty, since the chickens still aren't seperated
he.gif
But I'll be able to collect theirs soon (the chickens), and raise some up for Liberty in the fall (I think). Fall birds don't sell as good, I might just do quail for then also.

I lost one of my tibetan quail hens, not sure what happened there. She looked perfectly fine, just dead

I'll have to get some more of those.

I now have a Barred Rock rooster, everyone, so anyoe who was gonna look for oen for me, thanks, but you don't have to now.

I got one out at Sano tonight. He's pretty, too (and young - about ayear old).

Well, ... I just put two roosters into the refridge for the night. One will go into the freezer in the morning and the other will go to the broiler. They were extra delcons and look good. I hope they taste half as good as the one my neighbor cooked for me. I might get motivated and process two more tomorrow. Don't know. I have to go get some more feed tomorrow and will have to unload the four foot tree trunks out of the back of my truck first. (kind of needed traction there for a few weeks. Know what I mean Vern?)

I thought I had another broody hen and I took her and her four eggs into the brooder pen and put an additional 4 eggs in with her. Well... long story short. She wasn't broody and would go bananas when I approached. so I took her out and put her back in with the others. Any bets that she tries to go broody again? Have to get rid of 8 eggs that were otherwise good. Oh well. Sometimes you have to expect losses. I guess I could fire up the bator... but I told myself no more until I get the herd down to below 40 or so. Well... actually below 20. I have a long way to go.

I was watching my backyard flock and was mentally culling roos. It looks like about seven more need to go in the next few weeks. I have a few starting to crow and being in the city, that just doesn't cut it. The little bantam Barred rock has been the dominate roo even tho he only weighs about two pounds and the other are in the 6 pound range. He is about six months older than them and was dominate when they were still chicks and they still run from him except for a few sneak attacks every now and then. Those roos who sneek attack him will have to go. I only want one roo crowing.

This is the first winter that I have not had a light on in the coop helping to keep the water from freezing. (I had put a regular light bulb hard up against the metal waterer and it keep the water from freezing and kept the temp up in the coop. Well this year I had read that ventilation was better than warmth so I opened the hot weather door for fresh air and didn't use heat. I did have a lot more chickens in the coop and that alone kept the water from freezing down to about 20 degrees outside. I did change the water twice daily and that helped as well. When I didn't change the water for about 24 hours there was some ice but it was around the edges and there was a broken place where they were still getting water from. Only once when I was gone for a day and a half did the water completely freeze. So far everyone is doing quite well with no problems.

That the round up from my neck of the coop. Hope everyone else is surviving this winter.

I do that too... I'm think we need to do some soon, so I can have more baby chickies the spring/summer

I have no electric in my coop(too far from the house for that) and there's been several times this winter that I have left their hatch open...Because I would either forget to close it before dark or was just too lazy to go out in the cold one last time that particular day. But it is up under the leanto so there isn't really any draft that goes through the hatch unless its extremely windy... The breeze is always coming from behind the leanto. Their water would freeze nightly so would bring fresh every morning and afternoon... Most of the girls would be eating snow when I'd go out in the afternoon to replenish water. My biggest problem, mostly all last week, was those stupid Starlings! They perched and poo'd all over the run even got in the coop through the vent space around the top, so there was po in the coop too.... Plus they would polish off the girls feed every morning(except when the hatch was left open the night before, then the girls kept the nasties away). Can't believe my real father named me after such a nasty pesky bird...

SHELLEY: pm me your Paypal info again so I can send you some funds for feed to cover the Java(s)... Unless you just want to wait and I'll give you cash for the feed and Javas both when I pick them up. Tried to call you yesterday, where were you? Your supposed to be sitting on the phone so you know when your friends are calling

I need to take Meri's cage back to her too... Unless you just want to sell it to me Meri?

Being that I rarely get to go to Sano. And you and Shelley are basically the only ones I get girlies from anymore. Other than the ones I got from Sydney. And therefore I still need a transport cage, right? You know, so when I con Ron into letting me have just one roo so my neighbors can happily listen to his crow, they said they miss that? It would have to be a big one with a nice deep crow. Right, like thats gonna happen!
