I know what you mean. My memory is only as good as the thing I write it down on. . . . It's a shame that people keep insisting on washing their foreheads. I told the judge that it was necessary, otherwise how was I to know who I was to stay away from?

I have 4 out of 14 hens all broody and hoggin the two most used hen boxes. I may have a fifth hen broody on another nest but am not sure. The reason I think so is that the least used nest box had 5 eggs in it yesterday and it is seldom used at all. What am I going to do if something hatches out? I can just imagine the kios caios ... ahhaaaa

(I cannot spell worth a hoot) confusion and mayhem that will break out when the hens start fighting over ownership of the chicks. I just hope I am around.

I have Memorial day and Mimorial day in cages now for intestinal cleansing before harvesting on Saturday. Hope they taste good. They sure are loud and frequent crowers. I am now down to just my four breeding roos and have started on the hens.

I have culled three egg eating hens and will probably sell them to a neighbor who wants stewing hens. These girls have been reducing my egg production for a long time and I have finally started culling any hen who pecks at an egg. I'm not giveing them the benefit of the doubt any more; besides, I need room for the broody hens broods.

I am getting a hard heart in my old age.

ETA: That I'll be hatching some coturnix in a few weeks, they take 16-18 days. I'll be setting them in just a few days, just as soon as my guineas and pheasants are done

Day-old coturnix are $.50 each.

Howdy again guys and gals. My wife is really wanting to get some guineas and I had a few questions. I have a 8 X 16 foot shed to fix up for them but will they use it? It seems most peoples guineas that are given free range "go wild" and roost in trees. If they do will the owls, possums and raccoons eat them eventually? I guess if they roosted in the cedar thicket they might fair better against the owls.

I have been thinking about geese instead. I have the shed fenced into a large lot with livestock panel big enough to keep geese in. or maybe turkeys.........................hahahaha. I want something that needs little feed and will raise itself (although guinea keets need some help at first).

Has anyone been to the tri-county livestock exchange? I am trying to get rid of some of my extra TSC "red" roosters, a few people told me I should take them there. Anyone done this before?

I've not lost any guineas to predators unless they were on a nest somewhere. Guineas or geese are pretty self-sufficient during the warmer months, but you'd have to feed them in the winter. I wouldn't consider turkeys as something that didn't need to be fed, and turkeys are very delicate as babies in my experience. Not so bad as pheasants (don't get me started on those!), but delicate just the same.
