Kitty and Dog Thread, Show Me What You Got, other critters welcome too

Okay, I knew what the English bull terrier was but didn’t remember about the American... they just call em Pitt bulls everywhere and so much that you forget... thanks..
And yikes.. that sounds like a scary situation with him “attacking” that other dog... that’s what hubs was thinking would happen if I got one cuz our others are respectful of each other’s food and bones and he thought a Pitt might not be so... also... we are no softies :D

I always thought the full name was American Pit Bull Terrier and have heard that a few times and of course pit bull but I guess maybe they're all interchangeable.

And I think they are probably fine with dogs within their own pack if raised together but you never know because some of them are quite dog aggressive and can be fine for years until they’re not from what I’ve read, even from owners of them (so not just anti pit people). So it probably depends.

He's great with our Silkie and other dogs when we are out. No food aggression or anything. He's just protective and doesn't put up with nonsense. We've had him from a puppy and intentionally put our hands in the food bowl while he ate, etc. We also started the dog park trips as soon as his puppy shots were done. He wasn't the aggressor, he was the defender. If the other dog hadn't growled at me and Abby and turned on us in an aggressive manner it would have been fine. He's been in a few brawls but just stops them. He's been hurt but has never drawn blood which is amazing.

We started with puppies so they would know to respect the older dog and there wouldn't be issues. I say go for it if you think you can handle it. Pits are wonderful dogs! Our Jack Russell was higher risk than these two.

He sounds like an amazing dog. :love

I think he sounds great. Better than being bit or mugged or something.

That makes total sense!!

Some would actually probably look at that as a good trait ha depends on your preferences I guess but him defending you is pretty sweet. :love

And as long as he doesn’t start it and/or only does it when necessary, I don’t think it’s really necessarily aggression. Franklin can be a little protective sometimes too. He even once ran off a bear!! Libby sat on the deck and watched the whole thing :lau

But of course some people prefer their dogs to be docile as little lambs and not fight back ever.

I’m not sure where I stand. Gator was sometimes reactive on leash with certain dogs and it was scary because he was so big so I kind of don’t really want to deal with that again and want a more friendly, gentle breed next but then I also don’t really want them to just let another dog beat them up so idk. Gator only really reacted a couple times but it still scared me enough that I didn’t really walk him much after that or would go at weird times. He was very protective though and also went crazy when anything came on the property or to the door. Not sure I want to deal with protection again but looking back I probably could have trained that out or at least trained him to back off when told and be more under control. I actually did work with him a little bit and he was better for a bit.

Is Frank reactive at all or protective of the house or is he fine as long as they are?

Sometimes I think a protective dog would be nice if/when I move out and live on my own and especially since I want to start hiking and walking a lot and being alone can be kinda dangerous but at the same time, protective dogs can be a lot to handle and I also want a friendly, sociable dog I can take everywhere so idk.

I was thinking Aussie cause they’ve got a little bit of the protectiveness while still being friendly, goofy, etc. and super smart all of which I like but I think they might be a little bit too high energy for me and still not sure about the protectiveness so idk.

I’ll probably just end up with a basic, generic breed like a Golden or Lab or a spaniel or doodle :lau

I’ve also considered poodle, English Shepherd, GSD, and a little dog like some of the little terriers and such.

Anyway, sorry for all the novels.

Frank loves everyone, other dogs and humans, until given a reason not to :)He doesn't react except to wag his tail and say hello.

One of my roosters got into the dog yard one day. I was thankful it was Frankie that found him and not one of the girls. He just sniffed it and wagged his tail. The girls would have hurt it.

He sounds like a great dog!! I think it’s great that he only does it when necessary. Although that said, doesn’t he growl or give any warning or anything first or just grab first?

And wow that is awesome! What a good boy. :love

Nope, I saw him coming out of the corner of my eye and didn't have a chance to grab him before he was on her. He weighs close to 70 lbs and he's not fat, he's solid.

If we continue our convo we should do so by PM or maybe in the cafe.

@oldhenlikesdogs I didn't mean to hijack your thread, I'm sorry

Thanks for your input... and I do think it’s amazing how he KNOWS what he is doing and has the control not to actually hurt but stop a situation without causing harm...
