Kodiakchickens scalped chick - Final post page 6

Great News!!!

Wes wiped little chickies eyes down this afternoon and she opened her left eye. When I got home she still had her eye open and when I went to feed her it was obvious she could see! yay!!!

Then, later tonight, when I was trying to give her a little bit of water, she sat right up, stretched her neck out and started drinking on her own. Then she started pecking at the crumbs of food in the water! She drank a lot and then when I put her back in her crate she stood up and started pecking at the crumbles we had put in there - with gusto!

She is doing so much better it's amazing!!! Her right eye is still swollen and closed so we'll wait another day or two to work on it some more to get it open. And of course, her head is still void of skin but all the muscles seem to be working okay and there's no sign of infection.

Thank you all sooooo much for helping out. I know I've said that a number of times but I can't say it enough. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I finally got up the nerve to read your sad post and pics...how wonderful your DH is willing to work w/you and the bird, as a team:) That must have been so awful to have found...horrible! And you have persevered together, to save this one's life and she is recovering, with everyone's guidance...wow...

Just a quick update as my computer has been down all day and I'm on a borrowed laptop.

Little chickie (don't have a name for her yet) had her right eye partially opened when I got home last night. Still can't tell if she can see through that one, but she definitely has sight in the left. She is eating and drinking almost normally though. Every once in awhile I show her where her water is and she drinks a lot, so I'm guessing sight is a bit impaired. However, last night she jumped up and flew to the edge of the tote she's in and roosted there for a bit. Hunny, our big dog chicken babysitter, was very concerned and came and got us immediately. Of course, we were very proud of the little chick but had to put wire over the brooder to keep her from doing it more and possibly getting out and getting lost or hurt.

Still don't have updated photos but will try tonight and post them ASAP.

A hard boiled egg in her feed can give her a good boost of protien every now and then. I am nursing a hen back from a dog attack and hard boiled egg and yoghurt are all she will eat. I think she's gonna end up spoiled!
Good luck - you are really dedicated.

I just saw this and wanted to add that I had hen with an identical injury, and she healed up just fine!! I couldnt believe it, but its true. Hope she continues getting better.
