Very clever on the coop Kris. That seems like it was a full day. I can't wait to see the chooks in their new environment.
How are you today Kris?
Doing great. Glad sales are booming and yup they're little piggies.Morning! I’m doing well today. Going in for a town day... sales are booming and we need more meat for sausages, and feed for the Meat Chicks... they are little piggies! How are you?
Rooster management does not seem easy. I don't envy you that. Thanks! I know it looks a little rough, and way too small for 7 Hens, Sammy, and the two young guys but they all fit together on the roosts, so long as they get let out in a timely manner they are happy and have lots of space to roam. I have run into a little hiccup. I can bang up another of these for Barney, but I’m not sure where I can put him to free range and keep him separate enough from Sammy and his buddies. Although Sammy and the two cockerels have an established hierarchy, and they occasionally “discuss” this, they don’t really “fight” it’s mostly a flare, flare, nope, you’re still the “big Rooster”... without any real bloodshed (though if Sammy or Dean gets even a little scratch on their Wattles or Comb they look like a well fed polar bear with their white feathers!)
Barney is separate though, with his own Hens, and takes any other male presence as a challenge to that. They need a good amount of space between the two groups. I’m trying to figure out how to balance physically distancing him enough to maintain peace, while still keeping him somewhere I can close him in easily in the evening, Early enough to be safe from Raccoons. I would like to place him on the road side, but I have seen coon tracks there, and it’s a little further from my view than I would like.
And then there is Roostie, lonely, single man Roostie... who free ranges and hangs out with his two girls, separated by their run, for the girls sanity... I will get this figured out somehow
That's awesome news. I'm so glad sales are brisk.Morning! I’m doing well today. Going in for a town day... sales are booming and we need more meat for sausages, and feed for the Meat Chicks... they are little piggies! How are you?
I love your "Happy meat " philosophy Kris. It is the reason I bought chooks for my back yard. I wanted to be sure I was getting "happy eggs".Thanks! Makes me feel a little less fanatical for when I get up on the “Local” “Humanely Raised” “happy meat” soapbox to know other people share my values and perspective on it. It’s a different way of doing things, but I feel better about my choices because of it.
