The short time I spent in Washington state I had to avoid the ferry bar. couldn't believe how many were in there slugging it down and then planning on driving in the city.:th
Drinking got banned on our boats ~ & if you are inebriated & troublesome you won't even be allowed to board. We've had a lot of trouble @ different times over the years & when the company changed hands they decided a new policy was in order. I'm happy. I hate travelling with drunks.

Well, the good news is when I was traveling on the ferry... I was staying at a hotel on the island and walking to and from the ferry. Once I got off, I'd call a taxi to take me to the airport.

Yesterday was fairly busy, I replaced and re-wired the lights on our utility trailer (5x10 open trailer with a large rear ramp) due to an unfortunate cow incident or two and me backing it into the barn (like “crunch, oops!” not inside the barn like I was aiming for) the originals were completely broken. Then I finally modified the egg door on Mr Marans tractor, and built a nest box insert for them, which I then gave to Chickie Hawks girls, as they are my “escape out the egg door” girls and I’m hoping this will slow them down some for my Mother today.

Mr Maran and his ladies were not impressed by the angle grinder, but I have to say I LOVE :love that Rooster. He is such a good boy! He herded all his ladies to the far corner from where I was working with the awful loud sparky thing, and took good care of them standing between them and the threatening thing watchful and alert. It was awesome. I’m going to buy some mealworms in town for them today! They earned it. I only got 2 eggs from them yesterday. I’m guessing it was due to the stress of me taking their box apart and making such a racket. I feel just awful that I didn’t give them a nest box or even reattach their old 2x4 L I had in the corner as a “temporary measure” since they started laying in March.

Today is a town Day. Dr appt for Andrew’s upcoming pacemaker replacement, picking up a pallet of feed, and doing some shopping. Getting sausage making supplies is our first order of business, as we will be doing the Bratwursts for the Summer Saturday Markets starting on the 18th. It’s also a good opportunity for us to sell our raw sausages. Other good news is tomorrow our ColdRoom should be repaired. A motor for the compressor was out or something, and parts needed to be ordered for it.

It is so cool to watch a rooster do what he is supposed to do. You are lucky to have Mr. Maran.

And here I am having a discreet beer, on the ferry... illegally  . Granted it’s just one, and it’s a two hour trip. When we get off there is no traffic, just the occasional deer, potholes, and cliffs to avoid. Now, I’m not advocating drinking and driving, and there are a handful of people on island that drive inebriated. And this has caused problems and accidents, but mostly people look out for each other and it’s not often someone will leave an event intoxicated without having someone else yank their keys and drive them home, occasionally forcibly.

We would never, even on a late night trip, drink on the way into the city though! Or my pet peeve, which falls into the “inebriated and troublesome” category... on summer afternoon ferries, the weekender brats (early 20somethings and underage teens) openly drinking on the bloody deck of the ferry! In the ubiquitous red solo cups even... they get loud and rowdy and it’s just obnoxious.

My personal favorite drinking and driving story... the police came on island and set up a roadblock just up the hill from the pub, where there is just the one road to and from. There are no police on island, and we have volunteers for our emergency services... ambulance and fire department. Well the fire chief got a ticket for DUI that night, as he was at home, drinking, and got the call that the police had set up a roadblock... as this never happens here he decided to check it out, by driving down there and seeing it in person!:gig

It’s definitely a little different here, but unsafe driving due to drugs and alcohol is not a huge issue. What is worse for us is weekenders, tourists, and summer people driving way to fast for roads that are single lane alternating traffic in many places. Yesterday Andrew was put into the ditch in our big flat deck truck by an idiot in a Mercedes flying around a corner on a steep hill. And people who don’t pull to the side or yield to less maneuverable vehicles are an issue as well, our 2 wheel drive truck is 3/4 of the way down the gravel road of a steep hill... no way are we able to back it up, the other car needs to reverse back around the corner. Oh and there is one lady who actually admits she doesn’t back up because she “doesn’t know how to” how did you get your license if you can’t reverse???

Sorry, town days make me grumpy, and we almost missed getting our pallet of feed because of traffic :he

There are people who will have a discreet drink... lol out the back or on the barge but it's just that, discreet, & they are not the problem. The weekenders who want to party in the park next to the jetty & think it's fun to smash their beer bottles on the rock wall of the swimming pool or the barge ramp...!!!! I have no words. Our kiddies swim in that. We put our boats in the water there & there is nothing nastier than a glass gash from something you haven't seen in the sand or water!

We have police stationed here now. I think they got tired of the island wire that let everyone on the islands know as soon as the Police barge pulled out of the mainland marina!:lau The inebriated ones just parked their cars & walked or got a lift but there are heaps more people now & our council has finally been guilted into sealing most of our main roads ~ though they are not all 2 lanes.

After the Brisbane floods a lot of lower socio~economic families were moved onto the islands because rentals are cheap. Living here is not! That caused problems. Everything costs ~ from your fuel to your groceries ~ & your drug of choice. A family outing has to factor in the boat trip [expensive] not just the cost of a movie or theme park or whatever. We are transitioning from mostly rural & farming to urban retirees with money. I just raise chickens & cats!

Sounds like a very similar socioeconomic situation to what we have here! Weekenders are always trouble though. We are a strict pack in pack out island, with no garbage collection, which either discourages or encourages littering and dumping. It’s always cute to see the campers walking around with their black garbage bag full of trash trying to find a receptacle or wandering into recycling asking where they can drop it off... and don’t try leaving it on the ferry either!

I live on a one lane road, when we were bringing my household goods here (no way a tractor trailer can come here, so we parked it at the marina and made trips with a trailer.) a lady was coming out from our neighbors place in her Mercedes. There were four of us with trucks and trailers and she expected us to backup to the highway to let her through. She was not happy when we made her back up and pull into the grass to let us pass.
