Kristen’s Chickens and Farming Ventures

Hi, another mini update... at least I’m online every few days again, though I’m really missing out and trying to catch up on the other threads as quickly as I’m able... (I pale to think of all the reading awaiting over on @Ribh ‘s thread!) I have foiled the cows, as you can see by the disappointed looks on their faces as they stare forlornly at the chicken tractors they can’t get at anymore.

Roostie is about to become a single man, as Shanti (my runt CX, who just turned 1yo) is completely terrified of him, and hides constantly. It’s not that he isn’t a gentle boy, he’s just way too heavy for her to deal with. He now gets to free range a bit, but is still overnighting with them.

My hatch that was “due” tomorrow is almost complete, I’m guessing they are early thanks to the turner malfunction, but everyone seems to be doing ok. One super tiny baby, but no soft bellies or major problems. Six are out, and the last egg is zipping right now. This is the first out from early yesterday morning. Super cute Sapphire Maran baby, I’m watching the spotting for potential sex links, but there are three color types so far: black, grey/blue, and white.

Roostie is gorgeous. He may even rival Shad's Punch and Treacle! I love that crinkle pattern on his feathers. 🥰😍

Well it's Monday here Kris so your babies are kind of on time 😄. So glad it's a success. That chick is adorable 💖

O My Gosh. So cute. :love

I'm glad you wrangled those cows up, dangerous they are.

according to Sammy and Barney they most certainly are! This morning I was laying in bed listening to the sounds of the cows eating the grass and waiting to let the chickens out. It is amazing the noise shearing grass makes when a cow is mowing your lawn for you right outside your bedroom window. Suddenly, Sammy, Dean, Cass, and Barney all take up the big alarm call, so I rush out to see what has them all ruffled. Gus had mowed his way into their view! I guess you only have to have your house turned upside down with you in it once or twice by something 1000 times your size for it to register as a threat

Good evening folks :frow

Good evening Bob :frow

I imagine it's pretty traumatic! You would probably alarm as well. :gig

And today we have rain... buckets and buckets of rain. It started last night as light showers, eased up some then this morning it came back with a vengeance. The chickens are not pleased. The coop building and third Meat tractors have been put on hold. I am just as “happy” about this weather as my chickens are, but at least my garden bed is getting watered on the neighbor’s property. With the weather, I am actually quite glad that I didn’t get my meat Tractor finished yesterday, because it would be an awful time to put chickens outside for their first night! I just have to think that it’s good for the grass!

One con to shaving your head... it’s chilly at first, the other big concern is sunburning it. I only went down to a 3 on the clippers so I wouldn’t need to worry about the latter, but this weather had me scrambling for a toque (beanie in American, and I don’t know what they are called in Aussie speak. :p) before heading out for the chicken chores! So yes, I did it... And I’m very happy with the results.

As you can see, Yesterday sunburning was a concern! Funniest thing is, it upset the Chickens terribly... clearly they are much more visual in identifying people than cows or cats and dogs. And it took me a while to realize that they were alarming at me! They seem to have settled into an acceptance of this change today!
