I just ordered 4 Lakenvelders from our local feed store. They will be in a VT climate (chilly) and in the pen with
BR
EE
PR
RSL
and possibly a few more egg layers.
How good of egg layers are they? what color do they lay? Are they a broody breed?

I had them once, a pair of pullets from McMurray. Here is what I know of them:

They lay everyday, white eggs.
Nope, never broody on me.
Flighty like Leghorns.

Thank you, do they lay anything like leghorns?

Yep they lay everyday in most part except in the fall and winter, which they would take a break and start right back up in late winter to early spring.

I had a couple Lakenvelders for a while and they were decent egg producers and did a pretty good job of warning the other birds about possible threats. They were pretty flighty and to date were definitely the least friendly chickens I have ever owned.

I only have a roo but out of my 5 boys he is definately the meanest. He is my only mean chicken. That reminds me, I forgot to check for any battlescars from tonights attack. If he wasnt' so darn pretty he woule have been eaten a loooong time ago.

ok so basically I have gotten this....
-Flighty birds
-Mean
-Decent egg layers
-Consistent laylers
-Not broody

with some time and attention could they be nicer? I better clip their wings, I had a leghorn that escaped all the time and it ended with her being killed by a dog.

I had a pair of lakenvelders that my husbands boss just took. I wouldn't call them flighty so much as independent. The little pullet always came running when I came out the door, but didn't like to be held for long. The roo was very protective of the flock and chased me a couple of times but for the most part just kept his eye on me.

I did hate to give them up because they were so pretty (mine wre GL). But I needed to "get rid of" some breeds because I live in the city and needed to focus due to limited space.

She did lay a nice medium white egg nearly every day.

farrier! :

When are you getting yours?
