Langshan Thread!!!

From what I understand black has dominance but dominant white (vs recessive white) can turn black to white. That's to say, I don't what color those chicks will be.

It would depend on if the White was dominant white or not. In pure Langshans (which I think were used to develop the "Bresse" breed originally, the White is recessive so when bred to Black the offspring will be all Black but carry one copy of recessive White.

According to Wikipedia (under Solid White (chicken plumage)), La Bresse chickens are dominant white. So in the present case the chickens should be white or white with a little soot. Interestingly it said that chickens with recessive white tend to be 4-10% smaller than their non white counterparts (we've probably all seen this). It goes on to say that the main meat breeds in the U.S., the white cornish and white rock, are both recessive whites. They didn't let their genetic shortcomings hold them back.

Thank you for that info! These 3 are white with a little soot! They are big, fat chicks! I'll try to get some pics to post. I also hatched 2 of Linc's babies and 2 of Shang's. It is interesting to note the differences in the chicks. I hatched them in separate containers so I could mark them. I could tell right away whose chick was whose. LInc's are fat and round while Shang's have longer legs and smaller bodies! I'll get some pics of them to post, also.

Don't know what it is, but it's not a Langshan. No feathered legs. I mean I guess it could be a mix with Langshan, but even they will usually have some leg feathering.

Quick questions for the langshan lovers out there. Does anybody know about what age a Black Langshan will start laying? Mine is about 20 wks right now, but I have read that they can be slow to develop. Just FYI...I love this breed so far. Soo sweet.

Mine have been over 28 weeks before they start laying. I'm curious to see what age the pullets from my new lines start laying. The oldest ones I have from Shang and his girls are 14 weeks old.

Welcome to the thread! We don't chat a lot on this thread but we have some experienced Langshan breeders on here who are passionate about the breed. It might take a while to get an answer to a question but it will be excellent info when you do get it!

Is she a hatchery bird? My first Langshan was a hatchery bird from Privett Hatchery. She was slower to begin laying than my other hatchery breeds (except for the Buff Brahma that I got at the same time) but she reached POL at an earlier age than my Langshans that came from breeders. The 2 new lines that I have this year are even slower to develop so I am assuming that they will take weeks longer to reach POL. That's okay! I love watching them mature and I have plenty of eggs from my eclectic layer flock.
