Langshan Thread!!!

Pics
if anyone is interested i have 2 pairs of standard black langshans i'm selling at the ohio national. 1 pair is last years hatch and 1 pair is 3 months old. reasonably priced.

jeb, were you able to get any buyers? Just too much of a trip for us this time around. Had already made the trip to Lucasville for my bantams. One trip a year for birds! haha!

I took a few pics of my blue bantam Langshan cockerel. He's, to my knowledge about 8 months old? He is not the most cooperative model...

I was going to attempt to take pics of the black cock...yeah. Forget that. Most spastic bird I have EVER seen. I had to chase him down because he got outside of his cage, then proceeded to fly out the open window...UGH. After hatching eggs season is over..he is DINNER.

I'm a huge fan of him..he has an "attitude". When I'm done cleaning the cages, I put him back in and he does this little indignant dance. Hilarious! The white male just wants to be held and will talk to you. The females are ALL sweet. Never seen anything like it! The black male though...he's gonna taste good.

Thanks Ink!

Thanks for showing this. Now I think I will need some bantams too. If you saw my breed list, you would agree I really do not need another breed, but I really must.

Does anybody have any eggs or know of somebody that may have eggs from LF or bantam. Would I be better to wait a while when I can spend a little more? I have a pretty limited poultry fund right now. Pretty much money that I make selling eggs is what I use to buy more. I only have one breed laying right now. They are my Iowa Blues. I have also been swapping eggs quite a bit too.

My trio of LF that I was supposed to get I didn't get yet because of conflicting schedules, are full siblings. I would like something a little different. If they were half siblings I wouldn't mind, but full siblings, not so much, especially for future generations. If I really need to, I will pen my pullets separate and use them to create my lines. I am getting these now the first weekend of December when my parents come to visit.

Honestly, having full siblings is not that big of a deal. My birds started out that way. If I had been able to keep any of the chicks alive, I would have had several males and several pullets. As it wound up...that didn't happen.

If I were you, I would breed the two females to the male. Keep their eggs separated from each other. Once hatched, breed a male from one hen to the "aunt" if you will, or you can breed the male back to the mother and maintain two separate lines. After a few generations, if you notice hatchability or vigor going down, you can use a male from the other "line" to increase vigor and hatchability.

Also, if you're wanting good quality birds, I would definitely wait until you have more funds. This will allow you to do your homework, look at different lines (by going to shows) and choosing birds that you know. You'll be able to study the standards for each breed and know what to look for in breeder birds. Also, most breeders are showing or are setting up their breeding pens, meaning that selling hatching eggs is not their number one priority at the moment.

Thanks for the reply. I will probably hold off. Nobody close to me shows Langshan or the other breed I am looking for, Speckled Sussex. Due to commitments at home I can only take day trips to shows. The only show I even know about that is close enough is the Eastern Iowa Show, which I plan on attending. So, I need to rely on word of mouth and pictures.
Thanks

Beautiful birds.... what color are their eggs? One source I was reading said Langshan eggs are a very dark brown - another source said only one older strain of Langshans lay a very dark brown egg. Is there a thread on here somewhere with pics of breeds and their eggs? (would be awesome to do that and post egg color/pic of bird and where it was from (breeder or name of hatchery)...)
thanx

Look who is finding their way to their new home in Iowa. My sister took this picture with her phone and sent it to me. My parents are bringing them to me Thursday from SE Wisconsin. This trio has blood from Forrest Beauford's flock in them.

I also got a trio and a pair of Bantams at the Eastern Iowa show this weekend. The trio is pure Fred Ness lines. The pair is from a Fred Ness black cockerel over a white pullet from Dick Horstman's line. Dick got his stock from Superior Farms.

They were all shown at the Lincoln show and did well. Both cockerels took 1st and 2nd at the Lincoln show. The one that took first took 2nd at the EIPC show. The pullets placed in the top 4 at Lincoln. At the EIPC show they place 2nd and 4th. The one cockerel and one pullet were not shown at the EIPC show.
