Langshan Thread!!!

This is my Langshan hen, who is such a sweetheart. My daughter named her Furry Foot. lol She has been the friendliest of my chickens since the beginning and is just now 5 months old. She's from a hatchery but since I don't show that doesn't matter to me. I love her.

I have 3 Langshan chicks but I'm going to have to cull one. Her leg problems have only gotten worse. I'm using the whole him/her thing but I have no idea what sex.

Chick 1:

Sport barred? Too cool! Is so much more feathered than others



Chick 2: a blue?



And my poor little cripple. I will cull her this weekend. Can't stand the thought of doing it this week. You can see how horrible her legs are in the second pic







Chris is going to send me more eggs when I'm done with my current hatch. He is great.

They are beautiful! Sorry about the legs ..I have a sussex that I need to cull...can't do it...it is eating and learning how to get around...but...I still need to post the pic of my lone one...a blue..so I think! Thinking of you!

Hey new here and new to the world of raising chickens as well. I have already fallen in love with Langshans after getting a pair from a chicken swap. The are 2 and 1/2 months and black. I plan on showing in the county fair for 4-H. The only problem is they have white tips on their wings and I have heard that's a big no-no. What do you think the chances are of these feathers being replaced with black feathers. I will try to post pics sometime soon.

Hi, I have just joined, and being a Langshan-fanatic, of course I fell for this tread. I live in Wales, UK, and I cannot get over how similar your Langshans are to our Croad Langshans. I breed big white ones, but I do not go to shows myself. I have sent the odd one to a local show, with good results, but I try to sell them there, so I dont have to take them back into my own yard again, as I have not really got quarantine-facilities, and I dont want them to bring back all sort of creepy-crawlies. I currently breed from 3 different pens, and I sell eggs to as many as possible, to try and get as many as possible to start breeding them. Here in the UK only blacks and whites are in the standard, but as soon as the future of these are secure, I can easily see some developing the blues, they got quite far in developing them in the early 1900's, but they died out. There is a big state-owned Langshan-farm in China (I had a link, but it is broken now), and they dont breed blues at all.
They are clearly a very old breed, because they breed so true to type, and your American Langshans seems to have been kept clean as well. We had a Croad Langshan male imported from Germany a few years ago, and he brought back a very good fertility, and size to the breed, but with there being so few Croad Langshans around, of course the gene-pool is to small, so we need to be clever with breeding them, and breeding them good. My own strain has been bred for type and utility, and I only use proven layers for breeding on, and the result is brilliant, I must say, as many of mine lays about 200 eggs a year, which I think is good, especially for a breed that goes broody. I hope to have an interresting time here on this forum with SERIOUS Langshan breeders. Hopefully we can teach each other some tricks?

I only have one blue Langshan hen and I'm not in a position to be breeding chickens, yet! But when I do, B/B/S Langshan are at the top of my list!

Well, if you have one Langshan hen, you have one more than most. I have been looking a lot around in this thread, and I am absolutely gobsmacked I found it. The people in here seems to love what they do, breeding Langshans. I will post more pics soon, just looking for the memory-stick with some on it. I think my camera has packed in, but old photos gets as new?
