Large bulging area under vent in 1 1/2 year old Barred Rock

Quote:
I know it looks like there are missing feathers, however that appearance is due to the fact that the skin is bulging out. She hasn't been picking at it in the house, and there is no broken skin.

Thanks!

See the photo on page 2 that I posted yesterday.

What do you think? Smooth skin?

Chickens are attacted to red so a big red hens butt would be feather picken heaven... prob. she got her bum infected (still gotta figure out how though) and someone pulled a few feathers... i dont think thats what we should be worrieing about though...

Hi Irgarden,

I'm somewhat leaning towards what the others are saying: Infection.

I was also wondering if you have epsom salts or were putting epsom salts in her warm water baths. You didn't mention it if you have, but if it is an infection and you use epsom salts, it should help clear it up quicker than just warm water alone. You can get epsom salts pretty cheap at Wal mart or walgreens or any sort of drug store or pharmacy. I got a large bag of it for a dollar at Walmart about five years ago, and I still haven't used all of it. A cup of it into the chicken's bath water should be ok, presuming you are putting her in a human sized bath tub and filling it about 1/4th full. (that is at least what I would try.)

Thanks for the picture by the way! That helps a lot. Poor Chicken!

Let us know how she's doing!

Do you still have mosquitos or biting insects (or any other kind of biting critters in your local at this time?

Spider bite infection? Wasp sting?

<<<Just thinkin out loud>>>

Hi!

I have epsom salts. Can't remember why I had a big carton under the kitchen sink but there it was. I did make a compress with epsom and warm H2O and used a small towel right on the bum, yesterday. I'll do it again now before I turn in.

She continues to eat yogurt, lettuce, soft oatmeal and her regular feed. Stools look normal, color, form. Drinking fluids freely.

Our Wisconsin winters kill mosquitos and other creepy crawlies in mid to late fall. That is the upside to the cold winters

Thank you everyone!

Well today the size of the bulge has decreased and reduced redness also. I'm continuing all the above aforementioned remedies with increased epsom salt treatments. Between the treatment last night plus one early this afternoon, things look improved.

Thanks all!
Lori
