Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Do you guys think this is a Mottled or just a black with a lot of white feathers? Thanks in advance!

Hi, it looks like a Mottled. I raise mottled cochin bantams and most of the time they don't show their complete mottling until they have all of their first adult feathers. As they get older their mottling will become more pronounced. However, sometimes you may get mottled that do not have a lot of well dispersed mottling in the feather pattern. You will have to let them grow out about a year to see how much mottling they will end up with. By the way, she is very pretty. Is she a bantam or LF? She looks like a LF.
I really love the cochins, both LF and bantams!

Large and bantam blacks, especially the pullets, will have a great number of white tipped feathers about the head, breast, wings and feet. In most instances these birds will tend to have better leg and foot color (yellow) than the birds that are predominantly black at an early age.
Conversely, mottled chicks will tend to express a tuxedo pattern where they are predominantly black on the back and white on the breast and lower wings (they'll look like a penguin).
In my opinion, agreeing with Clare, you have a black cockerel that will have very good leg color but will mature out with some white feathers in his feet, which by the way is acceptable according to the APA Standard. Let him mature out to 22 months or so and see what he looks like, then post some pictures as follow-up to this discussion.

Blessings,

Bo

I have a 14 month old Black rooster that has two white feathers on each foot. He is a gorgeous boy...thank you Bo. I kept three cockerels from those eggs from last April...the Black and two beautiful Blues.

What color is acceptable on large fowl cochin beak/legs? Is it solid yellow like the bantams or are black or slate acceptable at all? My large fowl cochins are mixed colors (my chicks originally came from lemon blue project birds, and the chicks I've been getting have been blue, black, or some combination of blue or black and buff/reddish brown). I don't show, and I like the variety of colors I've been getting, but I'm wanting to breed for improved type next year. Is the ideal type for large fowl cochins the same round ball look as the bantams? Is that the shape I should be striving for? I ask because all of the large fowl cochins I've seen in person have looked quite a bit different than their smaller counterparts.

I haven't been on here to post in quite some time after the site was updated- it was super slow on my phone. But I thought I would get back into the forum and start by posting a couple of pictures of the cockerel I've kept right now. He's about 8 months.
