Large Fowl Cochin Thread

I'm in the UK

we don't have Millefleur Cochin over here (as far as trying to find anys concerned)
I brought these off a breeder who imports and exports.to Europe, though he says these were a on-going project but he needs the room for a bigger project now so had these up for sale, not cheaply I might add.

I'd be interested in the reds, too. I have the ability to get some at a reasonable price and am debating it. However - I don't have the means to keep every single color of every single breed seperated. So I'd like to get colors that are compatable if they DO breed together. What colors would you guys recomment that would breed better with each other? I was thinking getting a black rooster and he'd be ok to breed to pullets that are most any color, black, blue, splash, gold & silver laced, partridge, white, barred. The buff & red I'm not sure of. Can you breed buff, red, and white together? Can I keep those 3 colors together and then the other colors together? What's everyone's opinions on whch colors mix okay and which would screw it up to much?

I'm thinking about getting some silkie eggs to put under my LF Blue Cochin hen that went broody yesterday. I have NEVER done this before or incubated an egg. First timer here! Lol
What should I do and how many eggs should I get her? Should I do it soon since she just went broody?
This is so exciting!

Psycopeep: I am by no means an expert on LF Cochin genetics, but I can speak from experience that keeping/breeding buff, white, red, and even partridge does not effect color much. I have had red/partridge together in the past in the bantam cochins and the babies were always a deep mahogany red with and without the partridge pattern. I currently have a white roo in with a partridge pullet and a white and a couple of mottleds. So far it seems that only the partridge is laying because all the babies are partridge patterned but the red is definitely muted to a lighter red than the deep mahogany. As for the other color combinations, I do not know too much about.

MidsummerNight: During laying season for my peafowl, I always place two peafowl eggs under each broody bantam cochin. Last year, I had a blue LF cochin broody hen and I successfully placed 5 peafowl eggs under her. I would estimate that a dozen bantam silkie eggs would be safe.

Thank you :) since you said 12 little eggs i got 6 standard sized barnyard mix eggs to put under her. It's her first time going broody so I want to give her a test run and see how she does before giving her eggs I really want hatched.

Not sure why the P.O. has been so rough with the eggs sent to the midwest, I have had numerous reports of mishandling. The two you did get hatched turned out nice, I am glad you are happy with them, that is my ultimate goal.

Blessings,

Bo

I'm pretty angry with the Postal Service right now. It's not just the handling of eggs that has become shoddy.

I shipped two young birds to Colorado on Tuesday - they arrived on Saturday.

Two days later than the delivery guarantee! And the box looked like it had been kicked.

They are alive, but only because of luck!
