Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Beautiful birds! Can't wait for mine to grow up!

This is all I have for LF. I have 5 banty's but so far only 2 LF. A blue and a gold laced, both pullets.

I have been following this thread for months now. And just today have FINALLY finished reading the thread in its ENTIRETY. It seems that black and blue are the colors to go with for winning at the poultry shows. Especially from Mr. Garrett's lines. He has very gorgeous birds. I would definitely like eggs from his birds if they were ever available. The two colors that I saw very little posted about were partridge and red. I know there were only a couple of breeders on here with partridge. I did not see any breeders of red. Why is that? Are they hard to breed true to character? Is the color not available? I myself have two very beautiful LF hens(of course in my humble opinion) I got them both from a hatchery(just pets). One is a partridge and the other is a red. I have looked on here in the auctions, buy, sell, trade section for eggs for sale of these two color varieties for LF Cochin but to no avail. Would appreciate any help.

Thank you and have a blessed day.

Hi Georgina, LF Red is not an accepted color. They could be shown, but could never place better than Best of Variety and there wouldn't be any competition.

Bo Garrett, Tom Roebuck and Roland Doerr would all be good sources of LF. Bo is unusual because he offers hatching eggs (and is a truly wonderful person). Most breeders with SQ stock will only sell started birds. Many Cochins need to be artificially inseminated and it is difficult to keep fertility where you need it to be to ship eggs. Also, (JMO) LF Cochin eggs do not ship as well as other breeds.

I would encourage you to join Cochins International and have a look at the breeder directory. The Poultry Press is a good place to start for show stock of many breeds. It will also let you know what shows are in your area. That can be another place to meet breeders and find stock.

Georgina,
There are only two breeders of LF Red Cochins that I am aware of at this time, Tom Rice from Delaware if I remember correctly and Jim Kangas from Minnesota I have seen pictures of Jim's birds and they have good size and type and the color is very good as well.
I do have hatching eggs available from my black, white and mottled large fowl matings.
Glad to have you contributing to this discussion, the more LF Cochin enthusiasts the better!

Blessings,

Bo

Thank you for your reply dak. Your information has been helpful on those breeders. I am in fact already a Cochins International member:) it's a great website to learn from. The Poultry Press I was unaware of. How do I get more info on it?

Mr. Garrett,
Thank you for your response as well. Your years of hard work and dedication to your Cochins shows. Thank you for the information on those Red Cochin breeders as well:) I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to purchase hatching eggs from your Black Cochins( and maybe white if I finagle it) Let me know price and shipping and I can remit payment through paypal.

Hi Bo

Sent you a pm. I would die for some of your eggs. I just purchased a small starter flock from Tom Roebuck of LF Cochins and would love some more.

Hello All, Wow that's a lot of posts to read,
This is my first reply I have afue cochin L/F
Trever the black rooster I breed to my splash hens (or did he's to old now) for blue cochin
and this year I brought Leroy the Chocolate Cochin and his wife to add a little exotic colours into my lines.
and to see what colour you get when Cochin is both blue and chocolate ;) havn't found another breeder dumb enough to try that mix yet.
