Large Fowl Cochin Thread

I didn't trim feathers, and my Cochins bred just fine. But, I have read that some people trim.
I used food coloring to see which eggs each girl laid. Pick up the hen, turn her upside down, and drip food coloring into her vent. Each hen had a different color, and it was quite easy after that.

When you do this, how long does the food coloring last before you need to do it again?

Sometimes they poo out a lot of the color, but the Cochins are super fluffy and the color gets on their feathers and stays for a while. Getting it on and in their vent seems to mark eggs for a bit longer.

I'm also looking to expand my smooth feathered LF Cochin flock as well. I'm looking for B/B/S. I'd like to find eggs from good quality stock. Thanks!

You might try getting in touch with cieraphoto. She had some hatching eggs advertised on the auction thread last week. The photos of the parent birds were beautiful. Our temps are still too cold to ship eggs here or I would have bid!

I have 5 Cochins plus a variety of other breeds- Australorps, Marans, Anconas, Wyandottes. All are laying better with the days getting longer but not the Cochins. Is this typical or should they be laying also?

Be sure they're getting enough protein. These bigger girls do better with it. At least mine have.

Was wondering if this bird would be considered of good quality in feathering, coloring and such...not familiar with the breed but got this one in a roundabout way. Can't remember if I had asked that here already but would sure like to know if he has any potential within the breed.
