I just started in LF cochins. I'm accustomed to bantam cochins, so these guys are a new adventure. I purchased eggs that hatched in late March 2012 and kept one blue cockerel, two blue pullets and two splash pullets to grow out. They will be four months old at the end of this July. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

All three look to have good leg feathering, the middle pullet is pretty nice! I also raise LFS. I have a Black rooster and 2 lavender blue pullets and one buff pullet. Now for the not so good parts, the Splash pullet doesn't appear to have much color, it may come as she ages. The rooster is'nt as round and fluffy as I like to see. Just my opinion. I always prefer very round LF Cochin rooster, Like his tail doesn't Round off like I like to see. But, he is nice as well. I think when he covers the two pullets, it will create nice chicks. Hopefully throwing a splash, blue, and black. I think if him and the Splash pullet have chicks that are splash colored, it might add more color to them. I think these guys will be a good start for you congrats!
Im sure you've already figured this out but I'm still going to say it lol. Try to aviod wire on the bottom of your pens at all costs, it damages feathers. I like to keep them on a loose fluffy dirt flooring or wood shavings. I have a hard time keeping white feathered feet clean, but usually some Dawn soap works,

This cockerel has been growing "UP" and not getting very rounded. I do hope he fills out. I hope his tail will come down as the feathering gets longer??? He is so TALL compared to other LF birds lol. He's HUGE....

He hasn't started to crow yet, nor does he bother the pullets, so I think he has a while to grow.

The pullets have decent foot feathering - and I do keep my birds on deep shavings, trying to protect foot feathers. All my other birds are feather footed too (bantam cochins & d'Uccles).

The splash pullet....(I have two)....I thought she was white with some black feathers when she first hatched, but then other bird people told me she is a splash. I wouldn't call her splash, since I have splash bantams that are NOT that sparsely colored. Maybe you or someone else here might give an opinion on that??

He might fill out, his tail feathers are def not good right now, but they might grow down and round out as he ages, my cockeral is about 8 weeks and he isn't crowing yet or bothering my pullets whom are about 12-29 weeks old. I keep my cockeral and my pullets in different pens, only together when on grass in mornings and evening. Since I penned him seperate he has filled out a lot and I personally think it was good for him s ohe focuses on his food and not the ladys yet. I am sure yours will get bigger, hes but a baby. Some people don't even like theyre LFs to start laying before a year because the mature so slow.
As far as the pullet, she is a splash, but she just doesn't have much color. NOW sometimes color comes with age, I had a splash awhile back an dit was white when I got it, after about 3 months it gained ALOT of color, but not all will gain color with age either, it can be a guessing game. I would say give her more time and the color might start appearing.
What kind of D'uccles do you have? I love them. But sadly don't own any. What colors of Bantam Cochins do you breed?
LFs can be tricky.

I am new to backyard chickens and I recently purchased a LG Fowl Cochin Splash Hen. I love her! So pretty - we call her Bella. After much research I have decided this is the breed we will focus on besides silkies. I am very interested in blues and golden laced. If anyone has some quality roos or hens please let me know. I do plan to show as well. I wish splash was accepted as standard as they are so beautiful.

Is this a rooster or a hen? It doesn't crow, is 4-5 months old and I caught it mounting another hen. I know hens sometimes do that but never seen one at that age. I know it is not good quality due to the color bleeding and I definitely do not want it reproducing.
