Pics
To be honest, it's still a little early to tell sexes, at least from a pic. Feathering is not always the perfect indicator. (neither is anything else) I won't venture a guess on gender. Wait and see

In a couple more weeks you'll have plenty of idea. I've always gotten a kick out of all the BYCers that can't wait and have to post update pics twice a week for the first 3 months. All that happens is you keep wondering, keep the suspense up and find out the same way in the end anyway--the chickens tell you.

But as for the eyeliner: that's just chick down. Unfortunately it will go away in a few more weeks. I like it. Too bad it doesn't stay around. I guess it's kind of like camo??

I know with cochins....it is so hard to tell. It is just in this hatch there is a difference in the five I have. Three look different than the other two. Also, the two even act different....they stand up like roos....

Their father was at least six months old, maybe older before he got in a fight with the BO roo and I had to move him out. He is so gentle and sweet. I don't care if they are one or the other as much as I was wondering if the difference in the feathering out was true.

My mixed chicks I can tell already the roosters from the pullets.
My BR's there is no question.

The cochins are mine and I am keeping them. I do have a friend to rehome a rooster to if the time comes that I need to. Plus, just hatched out another batch. The mixed will be put in with the layers. The cochins will have their own coop and run. The BR's will go in as layers if they are pullets....the BR roos will be rehomed.

Well, I know that with Partridge, there is a difference, even as adults. The females molt much faster and they seem to hold their condition longer. Males take a long time to molt in. As chicks, you can see the female plumage much quicker than the male. I've never had barred or cuckoo, so I can't tell. They should be sexable at birth in pure barred chicks, tho.

Great Thread!!! We raise LF Black Cochins. We do show at as many shows we can get to. Rooms are all reserved for Indi!! We are planning on taking LF blacks to show and also many pairs/trios to sell. We love them.

They are pure cochin....however the roo is barred and the hen is black. Could not find a barred hen. But the babies are perfect. And there is a difference in them. I went out and looked again....three of one and two of the other.

Will watch them grow up and see.....

that is right and I would still be confused! They all look like they will be barred however. And they started with the same kind of spots on their head as the barred rocks. It did not last long however....thanks for answering.

Pretty excited, I have two fertile LF Brown Red Cochin eggs that are three days away from hatch. I have had fertile ones before but they have died before the hatch date. These hens are old 6+ and lay sporatically and the eggs are thin shelled, managed to hatch one last year a male and bred him back to these old girls to propogate the variety. These hens in six years have rarely produced a cockerel so last year was a banner year. So, with the blessings of the Lord, in a few days I will have the first brown reds of the year and hopefully I can get a few more before the hens stop laying for the year.
When the chicks are hatched they typically are very dark black with tinges of red around the front of the head near the beak. The more intense the red around the beak the better the color as adults.
One of these days I will become technosavvy and learn to post some pictures on this forum, sadly, I was born about a century late. Give me a pair of mules and a plow any day!!!

Blessings,

Bo

Two brown red LF hatched and another working, also partridge, mottled, and white LF cochins hatching and several bantams as well. Interestingly, I also had 12 barred rock eggs set with this group and all 12 have hatched with two of the chicks colored like I have never seen barred rock chick colored before. They are both silverywith lighter down about the head and two lighter stripes on the back. I have no other rocks other than barred and the hens have never been exposed to another male other than barreds. Interested to see what they mature to be.

Bo
