Large Fowl Cochin Thread

Hello friends! I'm raising a mixed flock and has two LF Splash Cochin chicks who are 5 weeks old.. I have a feeling that one is a pullet and the other a cockerel ... The first three pictures are of the Cochin I suspect to be a pullet. She/he is lighter in color, has feathered out uniformly, and has no red in her/his comb and wattle... the last four pictures are of the other Cochin that I suspect to be a cockerel. He/she has darker feathering, is slower to feather out, and seems to have a little pink in his/her comb.

Any opinions from any other Cochin owners????

Not sure but I'll go with your assumptions BUT if you're ever in the TN area and you want to bring them to me I'll be glad to take them

haha thank you :) I love these little balls of fluff. My neighbors have a Splash Cochin roo and hens and their roo has darker feathering like my "little guy" so that is what got me thinking it's a cockerel ... that and the awkward way he/she is feathering in so sporadically lol!

So happy to have found this thread. I've learned more about conformation and breeding reading from page one here over the last several days than I've learned in the previous year combined on my own. Thank you to all those experts out there willing to share your expertise with us beginners! I've been on a quest to learn all I can about the best type and quality while I await my chance to acquire some rare colored breeding stock. I really want to work with lemon blue. My understanding is I need br, birchen and blue in the mix. Any advice? Please do set me on the right course if I'm off track. I will be getting some LB project birds to start with and would really love to continue from there. It should be a fun journey while at the same time providing me with lots of eye candy.

Meanwhile, I need to locate the rest of the birds I will need to keep the project going. I would love to acquire some sq stock I could use both to show and keep the type nice in my project. Any breeders of the varieties I need, I'm highly interested in sq stock.

The darker one is not splash, it is blue; note the even leaden blue color with dark lacing. He is probably a cockerel. Hope they turn out to be nice birds for you!

Blessings,

Bo

Hi! I am completely new to chickens and so happy to have found this thread!

Jerry and Beth Smith had some of the best laced blues I have ever seen but I'm not sure if they are still working with cochins.

Draco,

Starcochins, Jerry Smith in Georgia used to raise Large Fowl Blues.  Apparently they sold the birds and the new owner kept their showname  so you may be able to locate her online , facebook perhaps.

I live in GA and began looking for LF Cochin eggs after researching and deciding they would be the most docile birds around my granddaughters. Jerry and Beth's names came up repeatedly in my search. With a little tracking I found the person they sold their flock to. She did keep the "Star Cochins" name and does have a FB page, listed as Star Cochins.

I contacted her last week hoping she had chicks but unfortunately, she is not hatching again until fall. I did not want to wait that long and it was sooo difficult to track down a breeder for local pick-up...she had eggs and I now have 42 in my incubator :D . They are a mix of black, blue, white, and splash. I am so excited about getting chicks from this line! I can't wait to see what hatches and am hoping for some really nice blue and blacks. I'm hoping I've done enough research and my complete lack of experience doesn't screw up the whole batch.

Oh boy! Well *he* sure is a sweetheart; I don't think I could get rid of him if I had to, he took a 15-20 nap on my lap in the sunshine today .. I'm thinking he'll end up staying as long as he is still well mannered when he's a little older! Thanks for your help!

Here are a couple we hatched from Star Cochin, they are 2 months old and adore them. Have B/B/S from the hatch, good luck with yours. They are better than we hoped for!
