Large Fowl Crele Project...

How are the "large fowl crele projects" coming along? I just got a Dominique rooster to cross on my hens, some of which are partridge and most of which are a cross of Welsummer and Wyandotte. I am hoping to get the Crele color out of the partridge hens but of course you never know. I wanted the pea comb and the higher tail carriage as well as the cold hardiness of the Dominique's, although I have wondered if the wavering bars may not show the Crele color as well as some other types. Dominiques have fairly nice "fly tying" feathers as well. I would probably be in the market for some hatching eggs next year if anyone has anything with the Crele color mixed with the higher tail carriage and (hopefully), the pea comb.

Hi, was wondering myself since everyone became busy for the summer. Even thou they are expensive for now, Beilefelders have been entering the country, i think via Greenfire ? farms. They are already a Crele sort of, autosexing. and Big.... there is a thread on BYC as well as a thread in Feathersite.

Interesting, I had never heard of this breed before-and they look a lot like what I was looking for. Thanks for the info!

I have 7 Bielefelders (4 females and 3 males) growing out right now. Just a word of warning about this breed that I was not expecting: they can eat and eat and eat. When one of the males was a day old, he wiggled his way through a hole in the feeder and stayed there eating until he was too big to fit back through the hole. They grow very fast and have appetites to match. Supposedly they slow down once fully grown, but I have not gotten old enough yet.

Good luck if you decide to get some. They are a beautiful and friendly breed. Take the time to read the Bielefelder thread. It will answer many of your questions.

let me know how they come out, I thought they were a little pricey this year-maybe a year of two down the road. By then I'll know what I'm getting crossing this Dominique Rooster on my hens-if I don't get anything I like the look of I'll try something else. I actually kind of like the fact that this rooster is not as heavy as the ones I have used in the past, the Bielefelders are quite heavy I gather.

I'm breeding my guy to (Polish) to a Gold Laced to get more red in the wings. Can I also breed him to buff laced? I know that won't add red to his coloring, but my buff laced are a lot larger than my gold. She's just too small for him, afraid he's going to crush her. Plus, she doesn't want to breed. He rapes the hens :( Pretty, but a very bad boy (flogs, bites). I'm hoping to to a male chick to replace him!! I have some due to hatch Tuesday.

Pam
WOW ! That is one fancy gorgeous hunk of man chicken !!!

Well, popping in to say I have 2-3 doz eggs in the cabinet, from the "Crele" cock and his daughter, a crele pullet (F-1)
The daughter is the result of breeding light brown rose comb leghorn with the Crele chantecler (who you recall, had a pea comb)
So, we'll see if he breeds true now !!
Can't waite for hatching!!

Eliz there is someone on our WA thread who is raising these birds.

Well I am sad and disgusted! A family member brought a dog over that got into my chickens and killed all my special crossbred partridge colored hens that I had planned to breed to my Dominique rooster to get the crele colored chickens that I was hoping for. These hens were a third generation cross ( four years of work!), of red and gold laced Wyandottes and Welsummer that I had been working with to get a longer, upright tail and erect carriage, small rose comb and partridge color in order to get the type of crele colored chickens I was hoping for. Blasted dog even got the one rooster I had kept to breed more in case of emergency. I have a few miscellaneous hens left, (none the right color and type), and my Dominique rooster. So I either have to start clear over or bag the whole thing. Very discouraging! I wonder how many "chicken projects" end up "prey" to just this sort of thing...

Check your State Dog Law. In PA, The dog could be shot if caught in the act. The owner is responsible
for the cash loss of killed livestock. If you are really ****** you can report the dog to animal control. In
the least, they should pay you for the loss, Check you Law, it should be online under State Statutes
That's so sad, I am so sorry for your loss! There is no excuse for the owner allowing that to happen!
Warm Regards,
Karen
