Last night's windstorm, is everybody ok?

Amazingly we didn't lost power!
I'm not in your neck of the woods, but...

The last "good" storm we had was two nights before Thanksgiving. First it dropped a line hanging on the top of my truck, a tree across the hood of our Suburban, missing my daughters and hubby's new cars by about a foot. Laid an abandoned neighbors tree across the (gravel) road directly by my driveway blocking the path out completely taking down cable lines. Another tree fell taking down the power line at the street and ripping my power box off the side of my house... guess who has to pay for that repair! This is when I lost power which means no heat, no flushing toilet or running water, etc. Thankfully the electrician came out that next day and restored power as the power crew was also working away on it and it only costed me about $700. :hmm

Well, my husband was the only one who went to help another neighbor man clear the tree off our road. A few days later, they were loading debris from the fallen trees.. this guy decided he was taking tree debris to our TRANSFER station... and then handed my husband the bill for $25... when the abandoned house the tree came from now belongs to HIS niece. He told me that by clearing the road he was doing ME a favor... even though his house and several others are farther up the road and no one else was willing to help or would have been able to pass. I refused to pay the measly $25, as I was not consulted about it first... and I compost. :duc

I told him plainly when I was charged for brush earlier this year I decide I would either compost it, chip it, or burn it. Old man (used to be a timber fellar) tells me "That's too much". Well, not for me! I'm not obsessed about my property being spotless like I live in the city. I here him griping at his wife all the time if things aren't perfected to his expectations.

These folks have been really good me since I moved in 5 years or so ago. Feels awful to have somewhat of a falling out over $25. They came back later and asked for the receipt so they could give it to his niece.

Turns out... if the trees were not previously identified as a concern to the property owner (or were in good condition)... they have NO liability... to repair the hood/fender of my Sub or cover the power box cost and it is considered an act of God.

Now if I am unable to do something about all the other half dead trees leaning toward my house/driveway, and top heavy from invasive ivy vines.. lining their property :barnie

Anyways, it appears as though a property line survey is in order so I can take care of my issues. :thumbsup

Sorry about the vent session.

Since moving up here... the storms are quite amazing. I had never heard freight train wind before or seen rain fall (blow) sideways and upside down UNDER the eaves of the house.

When it's safe to do so... storm watching is one of my favorite (usually free) activities. :pop

Was getting ready to lay down (roughly 2am) and after reading a post about raccoon attack I figured I should check on the chickens. Older hen has the big coop all to herself. The young ones will just huddle outside if their coop is blocked. Sure enough the wind blew their door shut. 9 pulleys and 1 rooster all huddled in small groups with an inch of frozen snow covering them. Picked them all up and placed in their coop. Dummies rather be covered in snow than bunk up with old hen or just go under her coop and stay dry.
Then I couldn't sleep so I read these forums till about 5am.
Checked on them this morning and they are fine.

Lots and lots of things mysteriously disappeared from my yard from the wind. Stuff that I don’t need though. At least I was going to throw away that stuff anyway :lau
Other then that the animals are okay and so am I. Thank goodness!
However, one of my friends got major damage on her house and she can’t live there anymore. So she’s living with me currently until she can repair it :(

Sorry for all the trouble you have had so expensive and then having to deal with neighbors. Are you in an area where the fires have been so bad too? I don’t know my way around CA but I’d love to visit the Redwood forest.

That’s sad. But so nice of you to give her a place to live.

Sure enough the wind blew their door shut.
I added an eye hook and latch to hold one of mine open. The other has a recycled hay string I tied a little loop that goes around a simple screw head to hold it open. Depending on your location and predator load... locking up is always recommended. Though my previous location I did not without issue for a couple years before I moved. My current location that would be a death sentence in short order.

Luckily and thankfully, I'm in the extreme northwest of the state and fire is usually of little concern as it's classified moderate rain forest. Our city (but not my place) is actually in the tsunami zone and has been impacted several times in years past. I have seen some of the fire storms though and they are scary! :(

Earthquakes... been there, done that. :hmm

Tornadoes seem the scariest to me. But see how powerful the rivers, ocean waves and currents, and winds can be... I'm just awe struck at the things we have no control over. It's amazing to think how far we've come in being able to detect and some degree predict these natural phenomena. Or even better harness and make some of work for us.. and block it out and be a LOT more comfortable. :pop

There are lot's of beautiful sights in California, this world, and beyond. But I do encourage everyone who has the desire and ability to visit to please do so! :wee

Very sorry for your friend. :hugs Glad she (and all your animals) is safe and has you to help. :highfive:

I'll probably do something this week to keep the door open. Probably just screw door in position. Their coop is inside the run so somewhat secure. These birds are goofy!.... when they were smaller they wouldn't go in the coop at night unless the heat lamp was on. They'd just huddle in a corner by the fence (bulbs dont last). One night found a clump of feathers from predator trying to grab through the fence.
It's hard for me to lock them up because I work nights and usually long ones. I can only do my best to secure them to take care of themselves and hope for the best.
Thanks
