I hatched this guy out 6 weeks ago from a Lavender Orpington egg. Upon hatching, he was obviously different from the rest, and I contacted the breeder. She assured me that she had no other Orpingtons besides Lavender, and she had one hatch out just like him.

Am I looking at recessive genes, possibly an Isabel, or a poorly feathered Lavender?

I have to wonder what is going on here as I have never seen a Lavender Orpington chick hatch out yellow. Then again, I have been seeing a lot of Lavender hatching eggs for sale where the parents have a lot of gold leakage. Which is also to my mind something you don't want in a bird that is supposed to be pure Lavender and makes me wonder if some out crossing was done to do something or just for the heck of it and it contaminated the line. I have to wonder if the breeder has a lot of gold leakage in their flock.

That's what I thought. No slate legs, either. He's just incredibly diluted with a good bit of white. Is Lavender Splash a thing? 😂 I have three of his siblings, and I did see the "parents" and there isn't any leakage, but who knows for sure. I know things can pop up several generations down.

I've been keeping him just out of curiosity, and I didn't want him to go somewhere that may breed him. If it doesn't look like a known color gene, he'll at least make a good supper. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm not too familiar with the variety, but the pictures online don't look dissimilar, so potentially! I know mottled can hide in genetics for generations before the two splits happen to create a visibly mottled bird. Not sure how the genetics of being lavender affect this though

Someone on Facebook just suggested a Lavender Jubilee, too. Either way, I'm hooked on this project!
