I have to admit I clicked on this thread because I've been eyeing Isabels as the last birds to round out my flock and a lengthy genetics lesson is too interesting to turn away from! My husband only recently agreed to let me get any birds and I've been slowly killing the poor, patient man. I'll have to see if I can find a good one of our upcoming stud, he's coming out of his winter coat shed and looks slightly pitiful.

I'd love to see your dogs too!

Here's Duke Oliver Gunner "D.O.G." a second generation silver. He was sired and whelped by silvers who each came from mating two silver factored chocolates. He's 9 months old today actually, and will go on to sire a litter January of 2018 provided he performs as we expect him to all around. Sorry for the poor pictures! My husband is the main one who takes pictures of the dogs, my phone is chock full of babies and if I even pull out the nice camera little hands are clamoring to break it haha.
About 12 weeks old I believe

And today.

This one mostly because it's hilarious. That poor dumb pup.

You can see that the dilute even works on their eyes, when he finishes shedding his winter coat he'll be a more even hue, the light shines off of them as silver, but there's a definite brown undertone that hints at their genetic origins

Thank you! He's definitely a work in progress, but that's how these things work. Hopefully in two or three more generations we'll have it where we want it

Probably it is more sliver than a Weimaraner - ? They always have a striking color too....

Good for you --

OH - and yes, you definitely need to get Isabels....there's no doubt in my mind.

They're actually grey with hints of green and yellow from the diluted golden hazel that most chocolate labs have. You can see then here

And yes, their coats are similar to Weimaraners, there was actually controversy about the origins of the silver lab as having Weimaraner snuck in because some breeders didn't trust the dilute gene. The same as when chocolate and then yellow began to appear from the originally black dogs. Genetics are funny that way, they hide things, sometimes for decades, before they show up leaving everyone scratching their heads and pointing fingers. In actuality the dilution gene is recessive, needing the right dogs paired together, and works on the combination of bb which produces a brown colored dog, also recessive.
