Layena® SunFresh® Recipe

Quote:
Do you feed the fish raw? I mix my feed 2 parts layer pellets to 1 part game bird feed. I feed purina. I give fresh veggies when we are not free ranging. I also give treats of soft watered down oat meal with olive oil on top. Mine love blueberries to, I use those as a training treat.

I just get canned mackerel and/or salmon. A tall can is about $2 and I divide it up into two portions, feed one now, one in a week or so. Sometimes I mix it with oatmeal, olive oil and yogurt. They really love it.

For regular laying hens, 16% is adequate protein. I use the 22% when some are molting heavily, though. For the breeding flocks, I try to run some Game Bird Breeder/Layena (with animal protein) through them on occasion. Helps with hatchability of chicks at 20% protein and is formulated for helping to hatch healthy chicks.

Some brands with animal protein are ADM Alliance Pen Pals, Tucker Milling, Faithway Feeds, and I think Dumor (though I never will buy from TSC if I can help it and have never used that feed) They use porcine (pork) products as the protein.

Purina's Game Bird feeds do have animal protein in them as well.

Mad Cow came from feeding dead cows to cows, who are herbivores. There is no Mad Pig or Mad Chicken disease that I'm aware of. The feeds say no ruminants are used in the feed, so they use decent quality pig protein, at least the ones on the labels I've read.

Speckled hen, I notice a few years ago, you were feeding Pen Pals. I'm curious to know why you've switched? I'm looking for a new feed and concidering my options.

Thanks

I like Pen Pals, but lately have gone with the lesser priced Tucker Milling or the Faithway Feeds pellets. The quality seems good, too, and our co-op carries all those brands. So far, no real dust, no bugs in any of them.

My girls love their Purina feed. They like the crumble size and I never see any waste. And there is no soy added. Everyone complements on how nice my birds look and how beautiful their plumage is.
And it's not anymore expensive then let's say Manna Pro.
PS Animal protein? Never seen that on feed before.

I feed my birds the Purina Flock Raiser. I used Layena before and liked it, but then I had more chicks and then game birds. It was just cheaper to stick with 1 feed instead all kinds of different bags. I've got one Black Sexie that is about knee high and weighs a good 8-10lbs

I just started feeding Layena and Game bird feed with high protien... we'll let you know how they are doing egg-wise and health-wise.

I raised my first batch of chickens on Dumor. They did fine.

However TSC started carrying Purina and I heard all kinds of praise on here, so I bought some. Pretty soon my girlies were turning up their noses and scratching out the leftover Dumor that I had mixed as I changed the feed. Hmmmm.
Also my new chicks raised on Purina Flock Raiser seem to eat less feed - which I take to mean that the food is better quality either more potent or simply has less fillers.
Anyways, I've switched brands based on my experience. It's only ~$2 more per bag.

All my girls and chicks do well with Purina even it would cost MORE per bag but less waste and less smelly poo.

As for Rural King brand of feed, it was nasty smelly poo and they poo out more than what they take in.

For protein, they get table scraps and cat food once in a while.
