Leaking Nipples

I also bought the Columbus aqua 5 pack of horizontal nipples off amazon - one on a 1.5 gal bucket in coop near their 5 gal diy feeder (bucket with a 3" pvc elbow, instructions elsewhere on byc) and 2 on a 5 gal bucket hanging under the coop for outside. No leaks anywhere after almost 2 months and hoping they don't freeze in winter as advertised. Undecided if will leave the little bucket in coop long term. Will toss a bird bath heater in the 5 gal bucket in the winter and pray.

"Leaking nipples..." there is a 5 month old human in my house at the moment - agree with above, the title gives me the giggles :)

DrFeathers, I also use the DIY " no waste feeder" best thing I did for the girls feed. 100% no waste

Also, if you were not sure how to make it work for you and weren't looking to install tons of pvc pipe yet...
you may have interest in what we did.

My kids and I took Tidy Cat litter buckets (the plastic square buckets with rounded edges). After we cleaned them thoroughly, of course-- we attached them to the outside about an inch or so from the bottom. We have used these easily for water buckets for 3 years. When free-ranging, we had 2. It made more sense to offer it in the run.

Oh also, it tells you the size of drill bit to use. And, I also used a sealant when I screwed it into the bucket.

I also bought a pack of those cheap chicken nipples from Amazon, and I have had leaky nipple issues from day one. The other problem is that the chickens like to play with the nipples and make quite a mess. You can put a down a wooden frame screened with 1/2" hardware cloth on the wet ground under the nipples, but the area under the screen still gets wet which of course draws flies.

One person I know solved the problem by replacing his vertical chicken nipples with horizontal chicken drinker cups. The drinker cups don't leak at all, and the birds aren't tempted to make a mess like they do playing with the chicken nipples. I'm switching to the drinker cups. I wish a could find a bargain on the cups since they cost a lot more than the nipples.

Brucifer - are you referring to vertical nipples? I started with those and they are very leaky and fun for the chicks to play with, you may have a bad batch if you actually got horizontals that are leaky?

Hi Dr. Thanks for the reply. I was talking about the vertical nipples in my post. I find that the birds get more water on the ground than what they actually drink. We ended up putting metal cat-food bowls under the nipples to catch the drippings. That helps, but it still isn't ideal since the bowls don't catch all the spilled water.

I considered horizontal nipples, but I was still concerned about the drippings. My friend seems to be very pleased with the drinking cups, so I think I'm going to give those a shot next.

I have the Columbus aqua horizontal nipples and they do seem to be leaking! We even installed a little foam circle to help secure the connection, after one nipple leaked so bad into the coop. But we are still having leaks. Thinking of somehow attaching a drip pan underneath the bucket, but haven't quite figured out how yet.
