Feedback Learning Center Cleanup?

Regarding quality control / review: We're working on a few ideas for this and will keep y'all posted!

Regarding organization. Here's the current category hierarchy of our Articles:

As was pointed out, "incubator & brooders" and "feeders & waterers" are all sub-categories of the main sections. Unfortunately, if someone is trying to ONLY look at articles within the parent sections, there isn't a way to do this.

Proposed Solution: Move "incubator & brooders" and "feeders & waterers" to be "siblings" of the other categories and not children of them. This is by far the easiest / quickest solution.

This is also in-line with an idea @sumi @KikisGirls, and @casportpony have been discussing around increasing the # of categories to break-out the Learning Center a bit more (e.g., splitting "Maintaining a healthy flock" into a few different categories).

Thoughts?

I think that would be perfect. More categories is a great idea - some of the categories are so broad that lots of things could fall under them, so more specific categories would be great.

Eggcellent....

By the way the selective quote is by far my favorite feature of the new platform.

I agree!! Much better....

I was thinking and suggested to Nifty as well that we create a "Managing your flock" category for the more general ones and maybe an "Eggs/egg laying" one for the eggs and laying related articles?

I like that idea! Also maybe a separate section for predators? There are a lot of predator articles in the Maintaining a Healthy Flock section. In that section I would expect to see more things about worming and mites/lice, maybe info about medications and diseases, etc. Predators would maybe be better in their own category, since yes, keeping them away from your birds is definitely required for a healthy (and alive) flock, but I think more of things like I listed above for that section, and feel predators maybe deserves its own section since it's so broad a topic on its own.

Things like how to deter predators could go in there, along with the profiles on individual predators, etc. Maybe some stuff about how to determine what predator is attacking your flock based on the evidence left behind, methods to deal with each kind of predator, etc. I feel those things would fit better in their own section instead of in the Healthy Flock section.

Why reinvent the wheel?
Why not have the same main categories articles as the sub-forums under Raising Backyard Chickens:

Incubation and Hatching

Raising Baby Chicks

Coop & Run

Feeding and Watering

Disease and Injury

Predators and Pests

Chicken Behavior and Laying

Managing Your Flock

Great discussion and suggestions!

The first thing I've done is moved the children categories from under their parents to now be siblings :)

Next step: Decide if / which new categories to add / rename and move articles accordingly. (If / as we do this, it would also be a GREAT opportunity to do a thorough review of the articles in each section to make sure they are meeting our community's standards).

I do like the suggestion that all article submissions should be reviewed for accuracy, clarity, and relevance. Articles should not be accepted unless content is reviewed for accuracy. Hatching eggs 101 is a very busy article. However, I suggest that it not be changed. It has a lot of pertinent information, and that information is backed up by science. This is almost the only article that I ever refer new folks to.

I like the look of that much better!

I kinda like the idea of having predators and pests in separate categories, but I think this is a great starting point, and I've already identified several that need to be moved to other categories, or the member section.

Thinking still some rather broad categories.

'Hatching Eggs' and 'Raising Chick(en)s' really should be separate.
Am assuming that is meant to be Raising Chicks not Chickens.

'Housing' and 'Feeding Your Flock' should really be separate.
There's all the different sized coop categories,
but 'Housing' could be a separate category covering nests, roosts, poop boards, etc....
...or maybe even separate categories of their own.

'Incubators' and 'Brooders' could be separated.
'Feeders' and 'Waterers' could be separated.

I know, I know, maybe too detailed...or overzealous about things being 'where they belong'...but in searching for info, or browsing, I don't want to scroll thru disparate items looking for what I really want to learn about.
