Lemon Blue and Self Blue

Yeah!!! At the same time I got the 6 lemon-blue eggs I also got a dozen golden laced eggs. I'm not at home to post pics of all but this is what the others are like..other than the 4 I post above.

2 buff
6 definite golden laced
1 black
2 blue

So the buff color could be the lemon-blue eggs?? Or are they from the golden laced eggs. (The eggs weren't marked!) I lost one chick to that "foaming" issue...I think they aspirate at some point during hatching. One chick...I think it was going to be a blue or a black, apparently died around day 18. That means that I only had one egg that did not it past day 14...either it was clear or wasn't progressing...just can't remember right now. That's a great percentage for eggs shipped all the way to Florida!!

That pullet is gorgeous...so sorry about her death.

When these chicks are grown....say one is a hen and one a roo. What would I get if I bred them together? How about breeding a blue hen to to a lemon-blue roo? Or vice versa? Do all the chicks from those 6 lemon-blue eggs carry the gene (like frizzles) for lemon-blue?

Well, you can breed a lemon back to a lemon but likely you will get a % of the colors we used to get our version of lemon-blue.

The buff is hard to tell if it will display blue feathering yet. We have gotten a few buff chicks ourselves and waiting to see how they feather.

This is our third year breeding lemon-blue and are seeing how the genetics show when you breed lemon-blue back to lemon-blue.

You can breed lemon-blue to blue, but you will get a % of both I believe. This is something that can truly take years to master and see for sure how they will look when grown up.

One of the varients we got at first when we got lemon-blues were black chicks with bright gold mixed in. Very beautiful, but the cochins we are using now are the choice offspring to avoid the black and gold. So now we are getting silver chicks, buff chicks and dark blue/black chicks. We are still waiting to see how they feather. The buff chicks you are getting are from our lemon-blues so they carry the color genes for lemon- blue.

Thank you for being patient with us as we are still seeing which colors produce the best results.

Hello all,
I had not ever seen this color.. wow.. gorgeous. I raised LF cochins up till last year when the daughter nabbed my stock for the grandkids 4H.. At present I only breed Wheaten Marans (doing my best to breed to the proposed standard). But would love to work on lemon blue in the cochins..
So I understand from reading-up that were I to purchase some brown-red hens and a lemon blue rooster the offspring would be lemonblue?.. still doing research but would like to get my feet wet and work on this color. Any thoughts and your knowledge would be appreciated..

Brown Red X Brown Red = 100% Brown Red
Lemon Blue roo X Brown Red hen = 50% Lemon Blue, 50% Brown Red
Lemon Blue Splash X Brown Red = 100% Lemon Blue
Lemon Blue X Lemon Blue = 25% Brown Red, 50% Lemon Blue, 25% Lemon Blue Splash
Lemon Blue X Lemon Blue Splash = 50% Lemon Blue, 50% Lemon Blue Splash
Lemon Blue Splash X Lemon Blue Splash = 100% Lemon Blue Splash

You can also reverse sexes and still get the same results.

Steve,

Thank you for the list also, I have over 20 lemon blue cochins and have not hatched any yet. I will come spring. Nice color but I love the brown red..

This is the color of lemon blue that I love, there is such a variation of colors..

Yes, there is a lot of variation in color. I am trying to get some with a more yellow(lemon) top than red-orange(like from the Brown Reds). I have a young cockerel and 2 pullets that have a actual lemon color which is what I am striving for in them.

Have you found it hard to get the yellow lemon color with the right blue color, most the lemon that are lighter have dark blue almost black base color.
