HI, Many will chime in and say this isn't healthy for you. It is in fact ONE Of the few healthiest. Many vegetarian or vegan programs will promote a fast cleaning, when they do - they recommend the Master Cleanse which is also known as the Lemon Diet, Lemonade diet, etc. Yes, there is no protein - but the whole aspect of this diet is not to LOSE weight, but to cleanse your colon and body, giving your colon a rest, etc.
So, to answer your question - Yes you need to use the right Grade of syrup, it is the kind that has the nutrients, what not that you need to acheive the results you are seeking.
The lemon alkalizes your body to give you the energy.
Cayenne boosts your metabolism to speed along the cleansing.
So, the whole thing together is a package deal making it what it is - so that you can do it healthy. Remove or change any of those ingredients - you are no longer doing the master cleanse, and will not reap any benefits.
Google Master CLeanse, there's a lot of good links out there, just gotta find them.
1) My husband and his co-workers did this. They all reported feeling after the 5th day - energy, less muscle aches, allergies gone, digestive systems feeling better, and of course weight loss. But the weight does come back after you finish the cleanse. The only way to keep loosing what you have lost, is to go to a stright vegan diet. So, you can see that the MC is mainly for cleanse, not weight loss.
2) My sister in law did this, and felt like she had a sharper mind, her joints were no longer hurting.
Word of caution: you fee like crap day 1-5. It's because toxins are being released and cleaned out of your body. You need to do the tea, sea salt to get it out, so it's not floating around your body.
Anyways, all of this information comes from my reading up on it. I'm not licensed, certified, or whatever to back up what I say!
Good luck.
