thank you for rescuing all these babies! eventually in the future, i want to have a rooster/drake rescue (since most males are unwanted and will be sadly used as meat). i don’t care about the eggs and definitely don’t want to eat my animals, so i think having just boys would make great pets
That is my reasoning behind my batchler pad no one ever wants the boys but I do i love them ive rescued 5drakes in the past month I love them they are so funny I love it when I talk to them and they tilt there heads back and forth like what momma what did you say these are my rescued ducks 1pekin is a duck the other 5 are drakes

Wow, check out all these handsome roos! I keep thinking about getting one again... we have usually always had a rooster but our last boy, Olaf, became increasingly mean towards the hens and had to be culled. It was a shame because he was very friendly with people and could be trusted completely with my young nieces... I still feel guilty about it actually. I thought we might just carry on without one but I like what they bring to the flock and we never had a problem with mean roos before, but my Mum is a bit nervous about getting another.

Our top hen, Lagertha, has become very dominant and started mounting the bottom hen regularly and is giving her a hard time. I think a friendly boy might bring some harmony back to the flock! I think Olaf was a Cuckoo Marans and that my Mum can perhaps be tempted by a smaller breed (I know size doesn't count for much but she worries that Olaf's fairly large size was a contributing factor!).

Lovely thread and thanks for all these beautiful photos. I miss hearing the crowing!

Ranger and Ryder are my two ameraucana cockerels. About 5 or 6 months now. I have a black one and a blue one.
I had bought a couple baby quail from a lady and found out she had purebred ameraucanas. She had two roosters and couldn’t keep them. She told me I could have the blue one because her friend who said she would breed them for her and had just said that day she couldn’t take both. Fast forward two weeks I gave her a picture of Ranger to show her how he was doing and she said her friend couldn’t take the two girl ameraucanas and the black cockerel so I took them all in!!

@FortCluck cool thread! This is my cockerel smoke. He is between 6 months and a year old.
20200525_090741.jpg

He probably crows around 30 times a day. He started crowing shortly after I got him, and he has been practicing/perfecting his howl ever since. Him and my guinea fowl are always calling to each other and getting each other all worked up.

Often visitors remark on the noise, to which I reply "Hey, I'm from Brooklyn. It beats car horns and sirens!" I love the constant chatter of the birds on my property.

When he first started crowing he also started testing his limits with me. He would lower his shoulder and charge up to me then stop. Especially with my back turned. I countered this by becoming the aggressor for a few days. I would walk through him and deliberately feint at him to get him to back down.

He quickly got the point and he now tolerates me from a weary distance. I am definitely a lot more into him than he is me! lol

I really enjoy having a rooster in the flock. Watching him in his all important(to him anyway) tasks throughout the day is a joy, and he adds a whole new dynamic to my flock. He currently has 9 girls in his harem, and 7 juveniles he sired and helped raise and take care of. He is actually their biggest advocate as they navigate their place in the pecking order. Looks like one of my juvies is a roo but thats ok, I have some more girls coming for him next week!

I think I will always keep at least one rooster. They are entertaining eye candy who play an invaluable role in flock dynamics!
