@FortCluck cool thread! This is my cockerel smoke. He is between 6 months and a year old.

He probably crows around 30 times a day. He started crowing shortly after I got him, and he has been practicing/perfecting his howl ever since. Him and my guinea fowl are always calling to each other and getting each other all worked up.

Often visitors remark on the noise, to which I reply "Hey, I'm from Brooklyn. It beats car horns and sirens!" I love the constant chatter of the birds on my property.

When he first started crowing he also started testing his limits with me. He would lower his shoulder and charge up to me then stop. Especially with my back turned. I countered this by becoming the aggressor for a few days. I would walk through him and deliberately feint at him to get him to back down.

He quickly got the point and he now tolerates me from a weary distance. I am definitely a lot more into him than he is me! lol

I really enjoy having a rooster in the flock. Watching him in his all important(to him anyway) tasks throughout the day is a joy, and he adds a whole new dynamic to my flock. He currently has 9 girls in his harem, and 7 juveniles he sired and helped raise and take care of. He is actually their biggest advocate as they navigate their place in the pecking order. Looks like one of my juvies is a roo but thats ok, I have some more girls coming for him next week!

I think I will always keep at least one rooster. They are entertaining eye candy who play an invaluable role in flock dynamics!

You should hear my house between the 8ducks and 17roos that reside here its music to my ears

I’m so happy there are other people who love the sound of a rooster crow. We just pulled 6 more pullets out of the brooder and added them to the flock. We had 4 cockerels that went into the 30x40 dog kennel. I’ll decide if we keep any once they grow out.

Usually extra cockerels without wanted colors or temperament get rehomed or feed the family.

Who here on BYC loves to hear their roosters crow?

How do you manage keeping roosters (tips, tricks, advice)?

We have 2 roosters, a Silkie rooster (Thor) and a Mille Fleur (Miles) who is loud but we find ourselves looking forward to his grow every morning. Lately Thor is chiming in with a much more ā€œdocileā€ low key crow :) it brings a smile to our face every morning. We had to rehome 2 Silkie roos but these two are getting along so far, despite the fact we only have two hens.

This is Castor. He's an Amberlink. View attachment 2261267
He's two or three years old.

I used have more roosters. Including one red Cochin bantam, Flite, who was very entertaining. A barred rock rooster, Prince, who was super sweet and was raised with Castor. And my favorite, William, the buff brahma rooster. He was so sweet and laid back. Unfortunately both him and Prince died this winter from a disease that passed through our coop. And Flite had to be given away because of Castor and Prince. So now its just Castor.

But I love roosters and definitely want to get another buff brahma rooster and maybe another rooster or two.
Did Castor show signs of missing the 3 roosters that are gone?

I'm pretty brand new to chickens, and all 4 of mine are rescues; three are young.
So, I had two biddies that I thought were hens, and named them Thelma & Lousie. Thelma lost a fight with a rat snake, then Louise started to crow!
Louise became Luigi and while he's still not very big, he makes up formin volume!

I’ll return with pics, just replying so I won’t lose my spot.

I have at least 5 roosters that are permanent and a whole lot more that are for eating.

One of my favorite roosters unfortunately has a puberty-like crow, it’s horrible 🤣 But I love the rooster.

There’s an EE I wanted to keep but his crow came out like he’s screaming, it’s annoying so sadly he has to go.

I have a black Australorp rooster who by far has the best crow. He sounds like his dad, hopefully he won’t be a butt like his dad or he will be dinner like him.
Perhaps try the nocrow collar on him before he loses his home. It chsnges their crow.

I have 3 currently. All bantams... Thank goodness. There's definitely a hierarchy. But they don't really fight. They've been raised together since day 1. But they're only 16 weeks old... So we shall see. I need more hens though or will probably have to re-home 1 or 2 of the roosters 😢

we currently have 17 roo's i have 7bantam roo's and 1massive roo that i don't know what he is in my main coop they have all grown up together and get along great and I have a batchler coop that has 9residents so far it is for rescued roo's for those that live within 3hrs drive of me for people that can't or won't keep roo's i will drive and pick them up and give them a great home and spoil them until they leave this world naturally I will have to take pics of the rest tomorrow some i just got so they are still in lock down so they know this is home and they are not totally freaked out by my dogs and cats (they won't hurt them but I don't want the roos to hurt my dogs and cats)
Well thankyou for taking in those roosters and letting them live out their natural lives happily. They deserve to live and be appreciated for the m a gnificent creations they are! I have 2 beauties my neighbors dont like their crowing. Such good boys.
