Let that crow!!!

I have only had my chickens for a year now. One of my girls was broody in early spring so we got her 4 one day old female chicks. The Swedish flower hen was more outgoing than the other 3 from the first day. She started growing faster and her comb and wattles were bright red by 6 weeks old. I soon soon realized my favorite girl was a boy. I unfortunately can't have a rooster where I live. I am trying to find a good home for him. The only replies I have gotten so far are asking if they could have him for food. I understand that he is a chicken. I eat chicken myself but I love all of my chickens and consider them my pets. I am not sure what to do.

I do love his crow. I even recorded it and made a notification sound for my phone with it. The only problem is that he starts at a little bit before 5:00a.m. and crows ALL day until around 9:00p.m. my neighbors have been understanding so far, and we are making sure that they have as many eggs as they want.

Anyway, I love him, I just don't know what to do with him.....

Here’s my roos. Rosester we believe is a Japanese bantam. We got him out of a mixed bantam bin at the feed store. Benny is a blue ameraucana that we got this year.
We live in the country and have about an acre and a half to free range, so crowing isn’t as issue(except for when Benny does is right next to my ear, that boy is loud) and everyone gets along well.

Unfortunately later the same day that I made this post Benny was killed by a neighbor’s dog. I do however have 5 possible cockerels in my latest batch of chicks. There’s 2 that I’m sure about and 3 more that I don’t want to make the judgement on quite yet. We’re keeping 2 of the boys.

I feel very sorry for people who live where their neighbors get to control their lives.

I'm out in the country now, but the town I lived in before had what I think were very sensible laws about backyard chickens.

They were allowed.

Complaints about noise or odor would be evaluated on the same basis as if the complaint were about a barking dog or smelly dog run and compared to things like lawnmowers, chainsaws, radios, etc.

When looking for property we told the real estate agent absolutely NO homeowners associations or similar restrictions.

So we had Ricky (a barred x austrolorp) but he's getting old and beat up. He's a good protector though. So he needed an apprentice so we got Big Poppa a barred roo. Then we got 6 lavender hens and 5 barred hens. Then Big Poppa turned out to big a Big Mama when she layed an egg. Ricky still needed back up... Good thing I got a roo in the barred rocks and two in my lavenders. Whelp. I'm keeping them all and they all get along.

I’m a beginner with chickens. In my flock of 10, one of mine turned out to be a Roo. At first I was disappointed, but now I am really enamored with him. His name is Poppie, he’s a sad excuse for a Polish unless he has yet to develop his flair. He’s only 11 weeks old. He’s such a little guy the girls wont let him push them around.

Did Castor show signs of missing the 3 roosters that are gone?

No. He didn't care in the slightest. If anything he was happy to no longer have a towering brahma rooster giving him the side eye from one fence over, and a brother who he didn't have to keep an eye on anymore.

Before I had chickens, I always hated the sound of roosters. Now I have a ten week old roo of my own. I'm hoping to actually like the sound, or at least not mind it much. I really want to keep him.

@FortCluck cool thread! This is my cockerel smoke. He is between 6 months and a year old.

He probably crows around 30 times a day. He started crowing shortly after I got him, and he has been practicing/perfecting his howl ever since. Him and my guinea fowl are always calling to each other and getting each other all worked up.

Often visitors remark on the noise, to which I reply "Hey, I'm from Brooklyn. It beats car horns and sirens!" I love the constant chatter of the birds on my property.

When he first started crowing he also started testing his limits with me. He would lower his shoulder and charge up to me then stop. Especially with my back turned. I countered this by becoming the aggressor for a few days. I would walk through him and deliberately feint at him to get him to back down.

He quickly got the point and he now tolerates me from a weary distance. I am definitely a lot more into him than he is me! lol

I really enjoy having a rooster in the flock. Watching him in his all important(to him anyway) tasks throughout the day is a joy, and he adds a whole new dynamic to my flock. He currently has 9 girls in his harem, and 7 juveniles he sired and helped raise and take care of. He is actually their biggest advocate as they navigate their place in the pecking order. Looks like one of my juvies is a roo but thats ok, I have some more girls coming for him next week!

I think I will always keep at least one rooster. They are entertaining eye candy who play an invaluable role in flock dynamics!
