Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

Good luck with the show Jean but you just know that little one's heard you and will hang on now

Interesting about your new incubator and the latest model has twin fans now but not familiar with the make in the UK. Over here I'm considering a new Brinsea with cooling features and improved circulation with quad fans. As the eggs are stacked on shelves rather than the floor I feel the air flow will help towards moisture loss.

Well, I lost one in the shell, but it wasn't the one I was worried about. That one finished hatching himself. His umbilical looks a little swollen, but I think he'll be ok. I don't think my eggs lost enough moisture.

Christine, is the little guy on the left by chance buff?? Lighting isn't great, but looks brownish rather than greyish?? does he have any color on the bill?
ADORABLE either way. Congratulations!

Pretty babies C ! Will see you this weekend, wonder what treasures you will go home with from auction!
NOTHING! That's what I'm coming home with - nothing!! I'm just curious and going to look. I have 4 goslings coming from Holderread next week (probably), so I don't need any more to deal with right now. My husband would probably hog tie me at home if he knew I was going to a poultry auction on Saturday. At least there's less potential for damage than the horse auction.

Also, I had that yard cross-fenced to separate my 4-pack of dewlaps from my production Toulouse pair, but I removed cross fence a few days ago because the production girl also went 100% broody last week in her igloo, and I decided to not take any more eggs from that yard. Should I take my production girl's eggs and relocate her igloo today too?
J - what do you use to cross fence? Is it temporary fencing? I need something effective, but portable to move around the pasture. It needs to keep out predators and keep the geese in.

Anyone use the electric portable fencing? I was thinking I could hook that up to a solar charger, but I'm a little worried about it keeping birds in and dogs out.
Anyway I have been dry incubating the eggs and so far all seems to be going well. I have a seperate hatcher all set up and ready to go. Just have to add water and eggs when the goslings pip.
I think I'm going to try dry incubating. My last two waterfowl hatches don't seem to have lost enough water before hatch. Of course, "dry" incubating over here isn't really very dry at all.

Christine, I have pretty much every variety of fencing there is on my property. lol My favorite portable fencing is made of pvc tubing and hardware cloth. For added safety from predators, you can run electric around the outside.

Just hatched 14 Saddleback Poms. today. Two eggs left are pipped and still viable. Well satisfied as I put 24 eggs in incubator and some had some age on them as I was waiting to fill a tray. Girls are still laying and one has gone broody and setting on twelve eggs. I have 5 more under a Muscovy hen. Don't know what I am going to do with all these geese, but thought I would hatch them and hope there is a market for them. I f not they are still enjoyable to hatch and raise. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

I love the poms! If you were closer I would get some babies from you!

Iain Utah, I am literally sick. I could PUKE right now. I'm trying not to get too sick about this but I am.

The cooling and misting is so stressful and time consuming for me but I know it has to be done. I have been so diligent about doing it but last night I was so tired, I feel asleep. I can only hope for the best.

I have three babies due this weekend. I just candled and only see one has internally pipped. Cannot see any movement in the others. :(

Oh well, at least I may have one gosling!!!!

Maybe you just have a couple late hatchers?

Says everyone who goes to auction.....

Remember to bring a crate
I know a guy here locally who dry incubates everything. He has good hatches I hear. He also uses the that sportsman model.

OKAY so I guess I am clueless.... What is all this talk of cooling period ?

Nice setup!
I just have to keep my nose out of the incubator today!!!!!

You can do it ! (in my best Adam Sandler impersonation)

Hi RiverGoddess - research supports the theory that a cooling period is beneficial for the developing embryo. In a simple way its mimicking nature as most birds leave their eggs to cool even if both parents share the incubation. Certainly most geese do take at least a daily break and their eggs cool in this period.

From our point of view cooling promotes gas exchange through the shell and promotes weight loss through evaporation. Most of our Dewlap eggs would never lose the required 15% weight loss without daily cooling.

Hope that helps

Hmm...that looks pretty safe. You made it yourself? How did you attach the wire to the PVC? My main concern is keeping one of my own dogs out of there. He's awesome at keeping other predators away (he caught coyotes trying to get into my duck pen the other night and fought them off), but he would eat my birds himself if given the chance!

Easier said than done!!!

THX Pete!

I just have never done that. I keep my humidity same through the whole hatching, have never misted or cooled down

These are my 1st dewlap toulouse eggs, and the one is internally pipping right now, and hatch day 28 is Saturday. So I am on day 25 & it is punchin away at the membrane
