Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

I just hatched out two African's! First time have ever hatched out eggs. We bought a pair of geese bout the middle of January. We had already decided that we would hatch out some chicks and thought we would put a couple of goose eggs in there too. This was on February 4th. Our chicks hatched a day early and then I had to be patient for the goose eggs to hatch. Well, today was the big day! Both of the eggs hatched successfully. Thank goodness I have read the Goose Incubation & Hatch Guide that Pete55 posted. I think that I would have two dead goslings if I wouldn't have read that. Thank you Backyard Chickens! I love this site!

I am starting to get excited. I have 2 eggs scheduled to hatch Wednesday the 13th, one on Thursday the 14th, and one on Friday the 15th. All are progressing nicely and have strong movement from the goslings when I candle them. After that I have one due to hatch just about every other day through the end of the month.

I stopped setting eggs for now, so I can start shipping my hatching egg orders. The first order goes out tomorrow and I am doubling the number of eggs ordered since so many are from first year layers: I want to make sure everyone gets a few goslings to hatch!

Something else I am VERY happy about is one of the local feed stores agreed to order some Mazuri Waterfowl starter for me: It will be in Friday. I have been trying to get somebody to order some for me for the past year. I do have a container of brewers yeast ready and waiting too...so now all I need are goslings and more coops/pens!

Thank you J and peasue. Last year becasue I fed wrong though the winter, had them on 18% protien feed screw up my whole season. Eggs would start but die in the shell early and a one that made it to the end and internally pipped and started the shell and died.
So this year had feed mixe at 15% and I am getting fertile eggs that are growing. I will not count on them all nor get excited about this. Last year My one female sitting the nest hatched only ONE gosling out of 85 to 90 eggs.

Oh my goodness.... only one gosling out of 85+ eggs. That's terrible.

for 100x better results this year!!

well, i've set 4 but 2 were infertile brown African/chinese geese. they are due to hatch the 15 (give or take a few days for pipping). they were bought from ebay. this is the 1st time i've had any luck (2nd time for geese)..... crossing my fingers for a hatching..... tho i dont know much about geese.

i have chickens, ducks, quail, pheasants, canaries, finches.....

Congrats on developing eggs! Fingers crossed for successful hatching!! Geese are not too different than ducks in terms of caring for them as babies, but if you have any questions, ask away!

Congrats on developing eggs! I can't wait to see pics of baby poms. I bet they are adorable!!!

Ah.... thanks for the mazuri starter reminder. I completely forgot that I will need to get a bag ordered from my feed store for babies, although I have 3 weeks until my first scheduled hatch.

8 out of 9 are growing here! Should start hatching on the 15th. Quail and ducks are hatched, chicken eggs are wiggling. Then it's just waiting on goslings!!

Has anyone had a goose go broody and still lay eggs? I was disappointed that she was setting already but I peeked under her and could see eggs??! She didn't want to be bothered so I didn't get a good look, but I could see at least two eggs. I never see her off the nest but I do work full time so she may come off in the day. She didn't over the weekend though. She is 11 months old and I have gotten 11 eggs from her. I am used to chickens who stop laying when they go broody.

When our sebbies go broody they stop laying eggs when they have a full clutch. In the cooler weather they will try to keep the some what warm that might be the reason she is on them. Or she has more burried in the nest that you do not know about and that is why she went broody.
