Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

I hatched her out from a Ebay auction last year & I was told the daddy was a Canadian Goose that migrates through his flock each year. BUT I don't know what mom is ~ maybe Toulouse? She makes this crazy honk noise, unlike any of my other breeds of geese I have raised ~ So cute. She is my daughters goose & she named her ~ Still do not know wear her name came from, and even asked my 7 year old daughter how she came up with the name & she says "I don't know ~ just thought of it"

Canadians dont have a knot on the bill which she has. Is she the mule that you said you thought might be fertile? I love the names of the pair its cute and unique. The honk sounds suspicious though.
I seperated them, so I know Roosevelt is laying me an egg every other day, I have set 3 so far (just on the 16th) I will set another 3 in a few days. I am going to set 3 rounds of 3 eggs to see if she is a mule.

My Tootsie Rollie pair have given me babies ~ I have hatched 4 from them this year, and
JUST NOW hatched one more sebbie baby

Looks like the gosling is doing great & have another sebbie externally pipped waiting to pop out

It doesn't matter how many you hatch ~ For me each time is

Setting her eggs would prove she was or wasnt a mule for sure. Im crossing my fingers hoping she isnt and that you get goslings.
I know what you mean by loving each as they hatch. Thats how i felt with my first hatch, which was last year. I had 9 hatch but it was on a 80/20 split with a friend. It was hard letting those 7 go, but i got my pair of production toulouse, Tucker and Tori. I wouldnt trade them for anything.
This second hatch and 3rd(due next week) is from my brown chinese pair Bill and Mildred (named after my grandparents lol) im a
nervous wreck lol and i only set 9 eggs. I hate to see what im likr when i set this batch of 20 i have waiting on an incubator lol they are from my browns, and from the new whites and tufted romans i bought last week. Some will be pure and some crosses. I saw my white chinese gander breeding a tufted and my brown gander had one also. Maybe ill get a knot on the bill with a tuft on the head lol

White africans=crackers lmbo! Thats a great play on names. Im still trying to come up with names for the 6 new ones. Tucker and Tori was just something that came to mind when they hatched. When they were little i would play "tuck tuck goose" with tucker using my hand. When i said the goose part id touch Tuckers head and pull my hand away and he would chase it. LoL probably a bad idea since he turned out to be a gander for sure. So far it didnt make him mean. I will probably want to keep all these but i cant. I dont think i could handle having a possible 30+ head of geese although id sure give it a try.

I have Goslings!

I wasn't expecting anything until Tuesday, but after work today when I went down to check on my broodies my D. Toulouse had three eggs hatching! One is all the way out, but I don't expect anymore until at least tomorrow morning.

River Goddess - You did so well buying that Petersime and luck was with you.

Your Roosevelt appears to be a Toulouse x African (or perhaps Chinese). With Toulouse lines in them they usually make very good geese for egg production.

Dwen - Congratulations on your hatchlings and I'll bet you're thrilled with them

Iain - how's the female Dewlap today? It may be that she's weakened from brooding, how long was she broody for? As she was broody it seems unlikely that she laid the egg you found.

For the moment make your care of her flexible according to her condition. I would keep her with a mate at night and preserve her reserves by offering a heat lamp. For any bird that's unwell its the first thing. It gives them comfort, encourages rest and more importantly saves energy being wasted. Next she's going to need plain fresh water to provide hydration. I really wouldn't add a thing at this stage and would simply focus on encouraging her to drink. if she has developed an infection this will help to dilute and flush out the toxins from her body.

During the day tempt her with anything - grass, lettuce, salad items and chopped apple which will all help to raise her blood sugar levels. You may find just warmth and nibbling at food items will help to start her recovery. Otherwise you may have to ask your Vet to administer a broad spectrum antibiotic until a more definite diagnosis is available.

Wishing you the best of luck with her

Thank you for the warm wishes! I think my dewlap girl is improving.

She ate a full serving of mazuri grain for dinner, has been drinking really well, and appears to be gaining strength. She was on the nest for 21 days when we forced her off. When I talked to my vet yesterday, he said it is possible this is a result of starving herself and being slightly anemic but he was very concerned about egg yolk peritonitis. If she does not show continued improvement, he wants me to bring her in for blood work, xrays and perhaps ultrasound to better diagnose and determine whether she needs an antibiotic or diuretic. I am also picking up assorted veggies later this morning..... kale, mustard greens, romaine.... as she doesn't seem interested in grazing on the grass. When I peeked out window this morning (barely daybreak here), I can see she has set up a nest in the new box I made and sitting tight again.

I wonder if it would help to put eggs that are going to hatch in a few days under her?

In bator news.... my two eggs look like they will internally pip today and I am especially pleased with how good my dewlap egg looks.

they hatch out healthy and I get a buff girl! As for getting the new surprise eggs into my cooker.... I managed to get them all squeezed in. Do you think I can fit any more eggs in there?

Nice fit J but can you close the lid?

I haven't had any experience with broody geese but i have with chickens and ducks and I am thinking yes to giving her eggs about to hatch since she sat for 21 days she would just about be ready for hatch and this would get her off the nest and taking care of her new goslings. of course others may have differing opions

I just returned from checking on my dewlap girl. She is definitely sitting tight on new nest. She looks in better color and when I put a cup of mazuri down in front of her, she eagerly ate it down. I will put bowls of food & water next to her this morning and perhaps boot her off nest again this afternoon to try to get her to take a bath? I have 5 eggs scheduled to hatch this Thursday. I can put a few of these under her?

Here she is this morning:
