Thank you for the condolences.

My next dewlap egg is doing well in lockdown and should externally pip by tomorrow.

A magpie is a small scavenger bird that is closely related to crows. They are quite common in my area, but I never thought they could be a threat, as they are usually content to eat grain out of my geese's feed bowls.

Are you kidding me? WOW that is scary. Our black crows are about that size and also steal grain and unattended eggs but NEVER thought of them as a threat to adult birds. Can birds catch rabies? How in the world can you protect the others from them?

And as of 10 mins ago

: ) so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How are your goslings doing this morning??

Soo sorry for your loss,i know the feeling, after our 3rd attempt incubating ckn eggs we had our 1st 2 hatch, then died the following night, the others didnt even make it.sniff, sniff

I'm sorry for your loss, too! By the way, I hatched out chicks for the 1st time a few weeks ago after having hatched over 50 waterfowl babies. I treated them exactly like waterfowl and had a very good hatch. I highly recommend following Pete55's waterfowl hatching guide for chicks too.

They are no threat to adult geese, but they are deadly to a 5 day old gosling.

My next set of babies will get a new and improved outdoor pen, complete with a screened roof.

Speaking of new babies............ my latest dewlap egg has a beautiful external pip and looks to hatch by tomorrow morning. The African egg riding with it is about 12-24 hours behind the dewlap egg but also looks good.

I would have never thought a magpie would do that either. I haven't seen a magpie in Western WA where I am, but I'll have to keep a closer eye on the crows.

Rabies only affects mammals, so the birds are safe from that at least!

Beautiful babies, Jasmine!!
