I put the waterer on a 2" x 4" block of wood in a plant water saucer. Any spills and chips are caught in the saucer.

As far as pooping in the water, make a cone to go on top of the waterer- then they can't perch on top. Even an old plastic funnel will work, as long as it's clean. And the feeder also goes in a plant saucer. Catches the spillover.

I have two brooders, both have elevated waterers but still the shavings keep a coming. And

at the spreading out the food and they look at you like..."aren't you gonna feed me?"

I have mine on a 18"x18" piece of vinyl laying on the bedding(paper side up). They do manage to kick a few shavings in the waterer, but it needs replenishing long before it gets too many in it. I have my feeders on 2"x4" blocks.

I use an old phone book, not only does it elevate the water, but it soaks up the spills. Luckily, everyone has some they want to get rid of.

My problem with putting the water up on a block is I have five different kinds of chicks...including one teeny tiny girl (golden campine) who is maybe half the size of the biggest (my cuckoo maran, I think), so I can't raise the water too high. It's both funny and frustrating. They are still in the brooder, which is rapidly becoming too small, and it is too cold for them to be outside at all, as the high temp at our house today was 48 and they are not quite three weeks old.

Not me, I use hay and nothing in the waterer. I can't beleive I didn't use hay first time around,..it's miracle!!! The chicks don't eat it, and of course choke on it, it's not soppy I just love hay

Um yeah!

I put mine up on some small round Ziplock or Glad plastic storage containers (about 2" tall and 6" in diameter) and that helps a lot.

I have my waterer on a 2x6 board...they still manage to get the wood pellets in it which immediately turn into sawdust. Came in after dark from running the shredder and filling a compost pile to find the youngest chicks waterer was completely filled with sawdust!
