Lets talk about goats!

I think they're bottle babies at this point. Their mom still doesn't have much milk. This morning I only got about 3 oz. out of her. The kids have only had about 3 oz each of her fresh colostrum including this mornings, but yesterday they were getting 1-2 oz every 2 hours (mix of prev. frozen and what I could get from their mom), today they're eating a bit more, so all is well. They are much stronger and more active today already. Normal bowl movements, so everything is looking good so far.

Anyone have any idea what I should name the little black doe?

Does don't produce much colostrum initially, so it may not seem like she is producing enough. Remember, they are newborns and have tiny tummies, they don't eat much when they've just been born. If you are milking out that much colostrum to give them 3oz feedings each, she is actually producing just fine and should ramp up her milk production quite soon. So unless she is rejecting them or you really want bottle kids, you don't need to bottle feed them.

Congrats on the healthy little ones. Twin doelings is awesome, unless you wanted some boys!

You should call her Zelnut. That way you can say "Hey Zelnut"

What breed of goats are they? Sorry if this is a silly question but I am very new to goats. I hope to get a couple of dairy goats when our very small barn is built. I see you are in Ontario. What about Inkspot for the black one. They are both so adorable.

Yes, Ontario, near Brantford. They are Nigerian Dwarf. I like Inkspot...will definitely go on the list thanks!

Oh, I'm sorry, I must not have been clear... In two days they've gotten 3 oz each from their mom total. She was kicking and moving away from them, clearly not willing to let them drink. I got 3 oz of milk from her this morning and just got 3 oz. from her a little while ago. Not nearly enough for two, hardly enough for one if you consider that they should be getting 1-2 oz. every couple of hours.

We are hoping to get a couple of goats when our small barn/large shed is built. Still researching what kind to get. Want pets of course but want the milk for cheese, yogurt and soap. Just two of us so don't need copious amounts. Yours are adorable and Miracle is a lovely name. Are they harder to milk than the average size goat?

Thanks, she's really special to me

I really enjoy both my Pygmy and ND. The only way they are more difficult to milk is that their teats are tiny! They are easier for me to manage since I have back problems and can't really wrestle with the larger dairy goats. I also have limited space, so smaller goats that can live in a smaller shed is a huge benefit, plus they are adorable and have sweet temperaments. The only other breed I really like is the La Mancha with their little elf ears. I had them for a few years and loved them!

Hey guys! I have a question about the quality of hay you feed your goats. I got 20 bales all from the same place but each bale is totally different :( the hay was a gift from my grandpa and they told him it was all good quality second cut horse hay, and it is, but there is no consistency. The last bale I opened they loved and this new bale I just.opened is the same color and has less stems but the leaves are broader and they dont seem as interested. Should I just use this bale as bedding and find.one with skinny leaves or will they decide to eat it? Thanks! Still learning :)
